Photographer’s Note

The Fraser River was the only transport route in the early years of European settlement of the Fraser Valley. Today the river is still navigated by ocean going vessels as far east as New Westminster, but beyond up to one hundred miles from its mouth the Fraser's dangerous currents and shifting sandbars render it navigable only by smaller craft. Tugboats still use the river daily to haul sand, gravel and other buildings materials to Vancouver and environs. Commercial fishboats used to be a common sight on the river, but since the depletion of salmon stocks, there are only a few days a year now open to the commercial fishery by law.
