Calypso bulbosa ~ Fairyslipper Orchid
> Calypso, the goddess daughter of Atlas, was Homer's beautiful nymph hidden in the woods and found by Ulysses when he was wrecked on the island of Ogygia. Calypso means 'concealment'.

Walk gently by these orchids, only 3" high.
Widespread but rapidly being exterminated in populated areas due to trampling & especially picking.
Very fragile and will die if picked by the stem as the roots of it's corms are delicate.

Good shot! I haven't seen a calypso in the wild yet, but this makes me want to see one even more... You have the technical stuff well covered too :-D

A wonderful photo. Perfect background, depth of field. The colors and textures are magical! What a privilege to have seen this in the wild.
