I was fortunate to be selected as part of the photographers who had VIP access to the planes and the 'photo pit' - the best viewing angle for photographers during the airshow.
That selection process was taken a couple months prior to the airshow through a photo competition where they selected about 35 people out of 2000+ entries.
Part of the VIP package was arriving 2 hours before the airshow started, and having close access to these beautiful planes on the runway.
And with the best morning light available it was my favorite part of the airshow! Just imagine my excitement, being able to get this close to dozens of world war II planes, Mustang P-51's and jet fighters.
While most of the other photographers used mid ranges lenses, I of course wanted a more unique perspective.
Using my 8-16mm Sigma gave me a chance to get REAL close up and personal with these beauties.
Here is one of the shots I got, I'll post more funky angles as the days go by. Hope you like it

I also like the POV, perfect!

Firstly, congrats on your success in the photo competition!
Great choice of lens, I admire your creativity, up close and personal it is. :)
I love the colours in this one, yellow looks so nice with the blue of the sky.

Oh, yes, I've seen this photo on your personal page in FB today. Eleu has often show us P-51 Mustang from different air shows. Well, I met this old timer on April too. Clever composition, the colours are superb! Fine close up!

Hi Craig - I am impressed by the series as posted on FB. I'm not a fan of planes but this is punchy and quite creative. The checkerboard pattern and dark propellers are attractively graphic and the colours look great against the sky.

What a cool privilege to get this clo and congratulations on being selected, one of an elite group! And well worth it, this is excellent sharp adage of this plane and I do really like this very funky angle, dring attention to the name on the side. And I really love that you have allowed all this deep blue, the plane seems to be looking almost wistfully up the air, it's true home. Nce one!

Tu as bien profité de ta condition de "sélectionné" et ton très grand angle a fait la différence, tout comme ton cadrage original.

Hello Craig, I imagine how Tosca is proud of you that you won this VIP access, I am also proud :). Very nice close up of this old flying beauty, excellent colour contrast. Funny this witch on the broom.

lucky you! I would love to be able to get up close and personal with heroic aircraft like this Mustang. A superb crop and use of your beloved Sigma, looks wonderful against a blue sky - I particularly like the colour trail of the exhaust here it adds that sense of strength and power to the image. Awesome!

You show us a nice detail of the plane of the P-51 Mustang.
Not everyone gets a VIP place on an airshow.
Nice sharp and attractive.
Excellent captured and lovely presentation
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

Congratulation for your selection. You deserve it because the quality of your work. And this picture shows it . You chose your angle with your special eye and your special lense.
I had the same privilege in the hot air balloon festival and it was a thrill.
ikeharel (58133) 2014-08-12 7:40
The whitch on her broom probably helped propelled extra thrust when the Mustang flown.
Nice artistic-approach on the colorful "nose" against the blue clear sky.

an impressive shot from this airshow. Wide angle helps to enjoy the beauty of this airplane. Wonderful picture with excellent colours and sharpness.
Interesting notes - congratulation

Un cadrage efficace pour renforcer la forme d'un squale.
Dommage que l'on ne puisse pas voir cette composition en version large.
Très bonne soirée.

Hello there Airman Macintosh,
Special access eh, so why aren't you sitting in the cockpit? :) What a fun time you must have had with this up close and personal attraction, like a kid in a candy store, yeah?
I used to work for a non-profit organization where we would routinely hand out P51's....no, not the planes, the can openers named as such....most people had no clue there was a plane with the same name!? Good luck going into battle with that, right? lol
Awesome that you had this VIP access from a photo competition, and I gotta' know, what picture got you in?
You're wide angle magic and smart composition has put a nice wrinkle on the traditional ground level shot of this impressive aviation machine. I like how much of the black & yellow checkerboard sits along the bottom of the frame and contrasts with the abundant blue. As you mention, pretty smooth sunlight as well. Cool shot! A lean, mean fightin' machine! Have a good one. Take it easy.
Cheers from rainy Phoenix,

Very nice photo with perfect quality, the name is funny, great drawing and I don't know who's flying faster: the witch or the airplane
holmertz (41707) 2014-08-13 4:08
You're uploading pictures now almost as fast as these planes could fly. You must be very eager :-). This is a nice close-up showing some amusing and catchy details that would be less easy to enjoy once the plane is up in he air. You were lucky to get your VIP treatment. I have to check up the picture that made your day.
Tue (27696) 2014-08-13 4:23
You were really lucky to be one of few to be able to photograph the planes from such close range. This is a great close-up, great composition with such a large part of the blue sky included.
alvaraalto (6177) 2014-08-14 7:07
After reacting on the last picture of Serp2000 it is obvious that I also have to compliment you with this “Double Trouble two. Only the red next to the yellow is even more smashing than the black and yellow of yours. But I think you didn’t paint the plane yourself.
josepmarin (57801) 2014-08-24 4:45
Hi, my friend Craig,
a good choice to use the wide angle lens for this close-up, because we can see clearly all the details of this real icon of the fighter planes in the WW II.
The P-51 is, in my opinion, the most beautiful of all the planes which fight at that war, though I love the British Spitfire as well.
The image have a high quality and is very sharp, you have played skilfully with the morning light.
An excellent job.
