Well, i've lived in the Vancouver area, its suburbs for the past 20+ years and this was the first time i've attended the Abbotsford Air Show.
I'll have to make sure I attend next year as well, because i had so much fun photographing all the planes in the air and on the ground.
Normally i photograph airplanes that are left abandoned, rusted or crash landed :)
So this was my very first time taking a photo of planes that were actually moving! haha
I've always been inspired by the photos on TE from Eleu in Las Vegas as he often posts aircraft shots, and also from time to time John will post airshow photos.
Here we have my all time favorite plane, the P-51 Mustang. I didn't know if it would be at the airshow or not, so when i found out that it was I was very happy and excited.
How could you possibly not fall in love with a plane like this! So beautiful, so powerful. It must be a guy thing :)
The shot may not be super crisp, but i hope you still like this because I have many more to follow!
I have 2 other posts in the WS, sharper images of more planes.

Not something we normally see in your gallery, so all the more interesting. A well composed image of these P-51s mid-air. Excellent colours and clarity.

It is really unbelievable, actually capturing this high speed air-craft is so difficult, but you perfectly done it. Composition, clarity, color, framing and all other parameters you managed perfectly. Good time recording.
MOST IMPRESSIVE AND FABULOUS WORK.
best wishes and thanks for sharing.

I like very much the way you captured and framed this formation, they look elegant and dynamic and the smooth sky sets them off superbly. The different details give each plane a special character, they are very well defined and so are the textures and "bodies". The perspective is lovely and, as in so many of Eleu's photos, I like that we can see the pilots. You have two very fine pictures in the workshop. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

Congratulations on these detailed planes, I too sometime go to air shows I always come home with a collector of photos of small black dots off in the distance, I guess my lens just doesn't have what it takes. Certainly not to take this level of fine detail anyway. It's great to see the three together like this, flying in formation and allowing us to appreciate the unique touches to each with their different painted tails. Nicely done, and great workshop too.

New stuff in your gallery, but an intriguing subject.
Taken well this air manuever, flying three in tandem.
In the 60th, we had a Mustang placed as a monument in one public garden in Givataim - during the 80th it was moved to the Israeli-Air-Force museum in Hazerim. I remember it was a daily show for me walking to school.

It was a pleasant surprise to find your name under a photo of flying planes. It's definitely something different for you. :-) I think you did a great job capturing these three beauties. The different designs on each plane are interesting, too.

I am sorry to inform you that I'm not much into airplanes either (it's not just cars that leave me fairly indifferent). But I can still appreciate a good photo and you captured these three in a nice formation. They seem to be quite close to each other, but I am sure those guys have done this many times before.

Hi Craig, after the rusted planes, one in the air! Nice composition, sharp picture but no brave girls like on John's photos :(. I like big planes that take me somewhere far, such airshows aren't for me specially interesting and I would be afraid of accident, it happens from time to time.

craig hello..yeah air shows are amazing..i usually go see the USAF THUNDERBIRDS ..but yes so much to photograph ..wonderful work you give us.superb shot all around! dale

Good stop action view of these 3 P51s in tight formation, and in their original military paint and lettering jobs.
We have perhaps the biggest U.S. airshow and races, with all types of aircraft - WWII, modern military, stunt planes, private planes, etc., coming up soon at Reno, Nevada from September 10th to 14th. And one of favorite participants are the Canadian Snowbirds.
I always get there early with my folding chair and sit in front with no obstructions.
Thanks for sharing,

I never pegged you for an airshow kind of guy. Cars, undoubtedly...shipwrecks, you bet...unsuspecting models, oh yeah ;)...but this was a bit of a surprise to learn of, and a fun addition to your collection!
I enjoyed your FB pics, and this one here is also a beauty. Catching people in motion is tough enough most times, but to amp it up with distance and speed, I applaud the result!
Cool trio, and how great that it would be your favorite too. Score! I can only assume the wide angle felt like a red headed step-child when it came to this event....well, at least for these aerial shots anyway. I see you still put it to good use on the ground. :) Flyin' high and tight, awesome shot amigo. Smart composition as well, leaving that extra negative space to the right. Have a good one. Take it easy.
Cheers from terra firma,

Trois bonnes photos de ce meeting aérien. Ce trio de P-51 bien décorés est du plus bel effet.

new telephoto lens?:)
Excellent shot!I guess it´s not easy to capture a scene like this, but the result you´ve achieved here is really superb!
Looks like you had a lot of fun there.

Ha! Ha! Craig, I can think of many more things that I could fall in love with but, sorry to say, not these! However, I do appreciate the skill and patience of getting a shot of more than one plane whizzing through the sky! You've done well. The motion blur on the propellers certainly helps to promote a sense of movement, of speed!
Have a great day,
eldancer1 (36343) 2014-08-11 4:38
Awesome! Three of your favorite airplanes in one! Can't get any better than that. Love the angle, catching the Mustangs from the top and in formation. If i was taking this picture I would use 1/200 to get more blurring on the props and smaller lens opening maybe f9 or f10 (according to light availability) for better dof. And more room up front. Otherwise this is well done, tfs.

big air-show fan me, yes it is a boy thing! We have two big shows here in Sussex with Eastbourne next week and my home town one just 3 weeks away. Unfortunately it is so rare to get decent weather which is essential when taking shots like this. Getting it just right takes a lot of clicks on the old shutter to get one image as good as this, but Hey! that is one of the advantages of digital photography. Super shot of some super old beauties.
Have a good week - B.
You asked about my vantage point on my recent posting of the new London skyline. The image was taken from the south bank of the River Thames about halfway between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. B.

A very attractive capture of these three planes, in a perfect formation. All three pictures here are equally good!
ktanska (27244) 2014-08-12 8:45
Awesome group on nicely varying colours. And the light is about the best possible. They are beautiful planes with those huge propellers.
I had a chance to see one in Tampere in 2010 but the light was rather bad.
I'm going to an airshow on Saturday but no old warbirds there as far as I know.
adramad (44306) 2014-08-12 9:31
Gorgeous ... and different composition, with these three fantastic aircraft, different colors and designs, as well as his training in the air, creates an image of great charm.
Great photo, with beautiful natural colors, bright light and excellent sharpness.
Well done. I love it.
You enjoy a good day.

I'm a fan of historical aircraft.
I would like to see them live :)
Greetings from Poland-Ostrow Wielkopolski!

The aircrafts are well placed in the frame. The point of view is showing the details of the NA P-51 Mustang in flight. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. I will be at an air show in Bromont on August 15, have a nice day.

I'm sorry I've been absent for a few days on TE - children and grandchildren visiting! But now I can catch up with your photos from your recent expedition to an airshow!
Wow! I can understand how much you love these magnificent aeroplanes: the Mustang really was the equivalent of the British Spitfire and Hurricane and a fabulous machine.
You have caught this trio superbly well as they fly in close formation and the light, the colours and the sharpness are superb in all three aircraft.
I see from your note that you complain that your photograph isn't terribly sharp but, in my opinion, that's entirely the fault of the "new" TE website. I've right-clicked on your picture, looked at "properties" and have opened the url in another tab - so have a look at this image and compare it to what you see here on TE - the difference is amazing - don't you just see how TE's "shrinking" of your original from 800 to 790 pixels in width really has destroyed the quality and, especially, the sharpness?
There seem to be two or three ways of kinda getting around this: you can just use "beta" TE exclusively so that images are displayed at original size, you can upload your images at no more than 790 pixels wide, or you can increase the pixel count to, say, 1200 pixels in width. It seems to me that if you upload a picture at 1200 pixels in width it doesn't seem to suffer quite so much from the "shrinking" as do pictures just a little more than 790. Anyway, see what you think!
Bottom line - I love this one!
