Photographer’s Note

Driving through Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan, we passed by a large ranch where we saw this group of pregnant mares. They were intensely curious of the intruders with the cameras.

This photo is scanned from a slide and was originally in colour. The colours of the horses were very dominant while the background was washed out. I feel the whole picture looks much better in black and white.

Joan, I love this photo! It reminds me of the old b&w hyper-posed family photos you find in your grandmother's drawer. The pose and composition are lovely; the wind in the horses' mane and the wide open background convey a beautiful sense of freedom. Very nicely done!
