Photographer’s Note

Scattered across the spacious flat lands there is abandoned sheds, barns and homes. It was an adventure worth taking, exploring these buildings. After some cropping to bring balance and putting more saturation into the red sheds, and then converting it to black and white gives this scene a feeling of times gone by.

Congratulations in posting an ensemble of grain barns from the lonely wide open Prairies Laurie. I like the viewpoint position you took this one from. The only suggestion I can give for improvement would be to see if the white trim on the barns could be brightened just a tad for a more dynamic range of lighting. Perhaps also post the barns in color and the balance in black and white. There are many creative ideas one can apply to this setting. Overall I see good results here and its a pleasure to view. Thanks for sharing.

These barns look VERY familiar! Now where have I seen these before.... hmmmmm ;-)

I like the composition with the horizon being well off centre and the bottom of the barns being hidden by the grasses.

I have to agree with Paul. The shot could benefit from a contrast boost which can easily be done in Photoshop/ Look for levels.. once there- you'll find a histogram. Slide the far right slider to the left until it hits the bottom of the 'mountain' you see as the histogram. This will boost the highlights significantly (but be carefull not to do it too much as you'll blow them out and lose all details. Next go to the far left slider and slide that to the right to boost the blacks (again being carefull to not do too much as you may lose all detail in the shadows). The middle slider can be moved left or right to increase or decrease the overall brightness of the image (mainly the mids)- salt and pepper to taste so to speak.. ;-)
