Mount Lougheed 3105m (10188ft.)

Mount Lougheed has three summits. The northwest summit is the spectacular one and the one generally referred to as Mount Lougheed from the Trans-Canada Highway viewpoint however the highest point of the mountain lies to the southeast of this peak.

A classic peak, the gently folded strata of Mount Lougheed's northern cliffs are often highlighted by snow which lingers on the narrow ledges which stretch across the steep face. W.S. Drewry and A. St. Cyr claimed the first ascent of Mount Lougheed but this was disputed in later years by Tom Wilson, the most famous of the early packers and outfitters of Banff National Park and the first non-native to reach the shores of Lake Louise. He claimed to have made the first ascent two days prior to Drewry and St. Cyr. All three were in the employ of James J. McArthur at the time assisting the surveyor as he conducted a survey for the CPR.

The Palliser Expedition was travelling up the Bow Valley in 1858 when Eugene Bourgeau, the expedition's botanist, first saw the magnificent mountain which dominates the panorama from Dead Mans Flat. It must have been just as much of a surprise to him as it can be to those who now travel up the Bow Valley by car on the Trans-Canada Highway. Clouds were swirling around the summit and so he named it Wind Mountain. He ascended some nearby slopes and to his delight was able to collect about fifty varieties of alpine plants. Unlike some others of the era, when Bourgeau got a chance to name a peak he preferred to choose a name based on a natural feature rather than use the name of a famous person who more often than not would never even see the peak.

But some seventy years later a decision was made that this was too spectacular a peak to have the simple name of "Wind." Sir James Lougheed had recently passed away and it had been decided that a mountain west of Calgary should be named in his honour. Lougheed had practiced law in the city in partnership with the future prime minister of Canada, R.B. Bennett. Sir James had been appointed to the senate and later became a privy councillor and cabinet minister in Robert Borden's government.

Hello Roberto,
Certainly an unusual take! the train as a foreground to these majestic mountains is certainly not very common. I had a 30 seconds stop before reading your note to confirm what this weird line in front was.
Have a nice day.
Best regards, Christian

Realy special view on this mountains
TFS
CHeers,Braca

The trees leads my eye to the beautiful scene of hills in ice with the sky competing very well. I also found the blue very pleasing here. The unusual view of the foreground makes me wonder what the object was before i read your note. Nice shot.

Hola Roberto,
Very well exposed mountain view with brilliant highlights and resulting contrasts, the passing train is a good foreground detail but all my attention is captured by these clouds the mountain seems to be smoking out !
Have a nice day JY

Beautiful scene, the snow-covered mountains, the blue sky contrasting with the green fir trees and the train in the FG. Nature vs industry. I definitely prefer nature...

TFS,
Andreea

Hi Roberto,
Back to beautiful Canada indeed. The bold and fat colours are what i like and including the wagons in front brings out something extra, i like that.
A very bright day you had here, a lot of snow, hope it's still there when i arrive in 2 months.
Regards, Henk

Hi Roberto,
This is a truly beautiful Rocky Mountains landscape with the vivid blue sky and lovely clouds above the jagged snow capped peaks that contrast brilliantly with the lush green forest.
The freight train appears to be one of the few modern obtrusions to this wild landscape.

Regards, Tom

A beautiful mountain scenery, white capped and surrounded by lush evergreens!
A fine layered composition, great colours and a fine sense of depth...
A touch of civilization in the train passing by!

Hello, Roberto -

Very interesting arrangement of the clouds and the mountains in a kind of complementary diagonals here. The capture of the train is also a nice touch, and it would have been nice to include the exif data so we could know about the shutter speed and such.

Best,
Dan

Hi Roberto!
Such a beautiful photo of this stretch of mountains. Lots of intersting layers, with the freight train, the layer of poplar trees, and then the fir or spruce trees, the great mountains, and finally the wonderful sky. The railway ties also figure into the mix well. Nice clear photo, with perfect colors. Nice work! cheers,

Excellent scene, well composed with the (tiny) train and the huge moutains. The light looks as pure as the air must be. Beautiful.

Contrastes saisissants entre paysages grandioses des Rocheuses et la modernité (?) caractérisée par cette succession de wagons...
