Sylvan Lake Marina, a photo from Alberta, Prairies

Photographer's Note

If anyone had told me early last year, that there was a lighthouse in the middle of the Canadian Prairies, I would have said they were nuts. But here it is, larger than life, at the entrance the attractive marina that services the picturesque lakeside town of Sylvan Lake, west of Red Deer, (which is between Calgary & Edmonton).

The water is partly frozen over on the surface, in places. Where the reflections appear smudged, is ice.

this is so ironic...i went out on a photo shoot yesterday taking photos of lighthouses!
Beautiful scenery, you can almost feel the cold crisp fall air.
very bright, clear and sharp.
well executed

Incredible , this marina and this lighthouse in the middle of the Prairies . But where are the boats ? The composition is superb , too , with pleasant colors .

Elle est superbe cette vue avec les reflets du phare ! Les couleurs sont très esthétiques, il y a une belle lumière. J'aime beaucoup le graphisme, avec ces pontons qui donnent de belles lignes. TRès bien vu !

Hi Chris,

The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The boat masts and the lighthouse have a graphical effect. The pint of view takes my eye toward the opposite shore which is giving depth to the composition. The nice sky is sending a light which is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Chris,
This is a well composed shot with the dock providing nice lines and angles throughout the shot. The lighting and colors are great and the photo has fine sharpness. The lighthouse adds a nice focal point for the scene.

Well, isn't that amazing!
I would not have expected it either!
The light and the clarity are excellent!
The receding line of platforms, to the r/h side, make a frame which actually leads to the lovely lighthouse-reflection, and ultimately to the lighthouse, itself.

The splendid fall colors make a striking reflection in the complimentary blue lake.
The docks and fences make lovely lines and the red and white light house a beautiful contrast to the sky and lake.

I've never seen a nicer and more ordered marina! Everything seems so perfect, clean and harmonious, and even the lighthouse seems appropriate to this toy harbour. It's a photo I like most, full of colours and vibrant with light. There are several diagonal lines and vertical ones (boat masts, trees and lighthouse) and all that give a pleasant feeling of harmony. Last but not least the frozen water is just like a mirror which reflects wonderfully both sky, lighthouse and trees: simply delicious!An enchanting place and a charming photo.

Hi Chris.
Yes, one immediately thinks seaside when there's a lighthouse in the picture. I suppose the flatness of the water and the autumnal gold foliage would give away the fact that it's a lake, but for a moment I was thinking it was a delightful seaside picture, before being puzzled by the Alberta location. Anyway, it's a lovely shot, with great light and warm colour tones; who'd know there's ice on the water? Thanks for the note of explanation.
