Photographer’s Note

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge is a beautiful outgrowth of an ugly past -- the internment of people of Japanese decent during World War II. Just as the United States did under Executive Order 9066 , so did Canada. Here is a site dedicated to photos of that internment. While the internment wa deplorable, I think both countries interned people in reasonable living conditiona and ways that allowed self-government and a great deal of their normal life to flourish including education.

So in the 1960s, during a more thoughtful period of tolerance, the idea for Nikka Yuko arose. As the website state one of the purposes of the gardens... "To acquaint residents and visitors with the cultural and historical background of the Japanese Garden and to establish a monument towards 'the contribution made to Canadian culture by Canadians of Japanese origin'."

Here is another shot of the garden, this time a broader daytime shot. Let's dedicate this serene look to racial and religious tolerance.

PP: Filtered to remove a bit of noise (hence the weird exif data) and sharpend. A couple of hairs and dust from the seonsor cloned. I also cloned out a telephone pole in the top right. Finally, resized and framed.
