I rarely, I mean really rarely do a landscape in black and white and quite frankly, I am having to take a very deep breath right now as I am about to post this shot. This image was an absolute write off in color as the image contrasts were extreme, so I decided to experiment and see what would happen in black and white. Low and behold, I was able to extend the effectiveness of the Shadow/Highlite tool alot more than with color so could draw out fairly decent detail from the very deep shadows, and with various other tweeking in CS2 including brightness, contrast, and sharpening with a wee bit of touch up with the burn tool, here you have my best shot at this one. As the title suggests, this is another shot of the Spray Lakes south of Canmore, Alberta. I will post the original from which this was taken in a workshop. Your help and critique is most welcome.

Hi Gerald,
This is a strange picture. It's total the opposite from the color version and brings a complete new perspective in front. Maybe some multi layers for harder contrast in the sky and on the trees, but also this is very nice.
Some might think this is not Gerald, but i like it when people try new things...well done.
Regards, Henk

Well I like the black & white version, and I think there should be more black & white landscapes posted on TE. This will not receive the same attention as a colour shot would get, because frankly speaking, colour sells, on TE as in real life. Having said that, this is a very good image, with a great composition from the reflection and the way the slopes sweep downward from each side. The sky is very dramatic too. I find that landscape B&W tends to emphasize the shapes, and works best with a high contrast images. Great work!

Hello gerald,

This one is a picture postcard and looks more like a sketch than a photograph possibly becausae of the burning process..!! great choice of B/w the coloured version does not look half as good as this one...possibly because the dogding was not done in the colored version by the lake sides..!!!

Great POv and very well composed..!!

Regards,
indro

Well its good to see you were able to salvage this image as it is a very pleasing composition. Those clouds have amazing detail. If Ansel Adams could do so well with B&W why not us. Well done.
Phil

Bonjour, cher Gerald,
Philippe

Hello Gerald,

This is no recognizable Gerald image, but an experiment have to can on TE.
I'm not great fan of BW, I know very well that you're a great photographer the previous pictures have this already showed.
I hope that we the next picture again a lovely colour image can see.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice sunday,
John.

Hi Gerald, except the technical sides they are perfect, the idea to have it in BW works great with the contrast they are ideal

Hi Gerald,
Excellent sharpness and wonderful varying tones to this lovely black and white composition. Lovely wispy clouds to the sky that along with the evergreen slopes make a very striking reflection in the calm alpine lake.
Regards, Tom

Hello Gerald,

This experiement in dual colours is excellent. The image has more character and is very attractive. The lakes are not among the most scenic in the Rockies yet in this image they seem very pretty. Nice work Gerald.

Roberto

Hi Gerald,

one of the most beautiful b&W picture :) i love how you made the conversion .i´m glad you post it ...specially when i´m a fan of this kind of shots :)
stunning
thanks sharing
best regards,anes

Well, I am a beginner in it and fan of b/w and I really enjoy this. The colour one is stunning and worth a post by itself:-). But this conversion is really good, the mood changes, so many details become apparent, a good job you did in my opinion. I would agree w/Floydian on a bit more contrast in the upper area. I like the compo with the V created by the left side (trees/reflections).

You are right Gerald in experiencing some few times colour shots that doesn't work at all - and then voila the BW version comes out far more interesting. A fine compo here and worth the conversion to BW.

Gerald,
This one is like a painting, with hard PP and strong contrasts.
I like the work you made, interesting and original.
Regards,
JB.

Hello Gerald,
Good work of PP, this version is good, a beautiful mountain landscape.

Bonjour Gerald,
une photo bien retravillée en PP, qui lui a certes enlevé de son naturel mais fait gagner en contraste et en irréalité séduisante.
Excellent cadrage et POV, une belle part laissée aux reflets.
Regards.
Daniel.

Hello Gerald!
An amazing transformation from the original: as Alvin ('Cormac') concludes, black & white shots won't receive the same attention, but I'm also for more of them - Ansel Adams knew a good thing when he was onto B&W!
Well done, and greetings from 'Down Under'!
Jeff
