Photographer’s Note
A photo of Herbert Lake in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
About this photo: I am dreaming of going back to the Canadian Rockies. I am hoping to make a trip there again in September of this year. It has been 3 years since I was there last and I think it is time...especially now that I have a DSRL camera.
During our stay in the Canadian Rockies in September 2006 we stayed a few nights in Golden, BC and the other nights we stayed in Jasper. On one of the days that we stayed in Golden we explored parts of Yoho National Park and the area round Lake Louise with Moraine Lake.
This day we left for Jasper and would stop at several lakes and viewpoints along the Icefield Parkway on our way. We had never stopped at Herbert Lake before, but I had seen such nice photos from this place, so this time we decided to stop. The weather wasn't excellent, but it wasn't too bad and I think I got a few decent shots of this place anyway. Hopefully I will be able to get a good sunrise here if we go back!

I used a polarizing filter, added some contrast and saturation in photoshop. I hope you like this photo.
Thank you for dropping by!

Some information on the Canadian Rocky Mountains: The Canadian Rockies are located about 800km (500 miles) east of Vancouver on the border of the province of British Columbia and Alberta. There are 7 National Parks that belong to the Canadian Rockies which strectches out over an area of 25,000 square km (15,625 square miles).
These are the National Parks that belong to the Canadian Rocky Mountains: Mount Revelstoke National Park, Glacier National Park, Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park which are located in British Columbia and there is Banff National Park, Jasper National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park which are located in Alberta. This amazing area is known for its beautiful blue-green lakes surrounded by mountains, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls and a diversity of wildlife. One can enjoy the endless views and there is a great variety on walking/hiking trails for everybody to enjoy.
Some info on Herbert Lake: Herbert Lake a very pretty lake that you can see along the Icefields Parkway. Due to the popularity of Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake this lake gets often missed by tourist and makes it a great place for some good photos and quiet times. There is also a picnic area located at the north end of the lake.
You can go for a stroll along the lakeshore and admire the views. It's definitely worth to stop for a picnic or just a rest and it's a great place for some good photography. I am sure you won't be the only with a camera during a sunrise at this lake!

What a perfect picture, Ann.
Very inviting... I lived for many years in Canada, but never had a chance to visit the West. Your picture sadly reminds me of that missed opportunity.
Thank you for sharing that one with everyone !

Dag Ann,

Prettig weekend,
Henk

Hi Ann
Good symmetrical reflections of the snowcapped peaks, in the mirror like surface of the lake. The fg rock adds depth & layering. Good sharpness & light contrasts. Tfs!

Hi Ann
A well composed shot that has FG interest as well as reflections and a strong BG. If you are in Yoho this year make sure you get up to Lake O'Hara. You need a reservation on the bus but it is well worth the trip.

A fine clear shot from Herbert Lake, Ann. Good choice of vantage point to benefit from the crisp reflections on the clear surface, and good inclusion of the foreground rock, once again enhancing the impression of depth. Well captured.

Deze is echt super. Een schitterende weerspiegeling en een heel erg fraaie compositie. Zeker ook door die rots op de voorgrond.

Hi Ann,
I can see why this image would stick in your dreams and that it must pop up now again unannounced when life is getting a bit dull.
The sky and mountains are fantastic and doublely so when they all reflect in this lovely alpine lake.

Hoi, Ann.
Heel, heel mooi!
Fulvio.

Ann,
how nice to see that you are full steam back to TE. Looking through your new collection I see some 'old' images, but also ton of new stuff. Wonderful!
The atmosphere of this one here is just superb with the perfect reflection. Just a small remark regards the reflection: Usually reflections are darker then the reflected landscape. I guess that the polarizing filter must be responsible for that. You might look into this for future reference.

Hi Ann,
This is an awesome Rocky Mountain landscape shot. The depth is incredible - marvellous idea to use the closeup rocks and grasses to lead into this amazing shot. Great idea and yes, bring on more like this next chance you get. Love it, Ann, and TFS. Gerald

Hi Ann,
Wonderful image! I can understand completely that you are dreaming about returning there. I have the same feelings regarding Alaska/Yukon, which I visited last summer. There are some places with such beauty you'll simply never forget. You call the weather "not excellent", but I think in this case the shadows really add something to your image. Together with the amazing reflections it results in a somewhat mysterious scenery. Well-balanced composition. Very well done!
Greetings, Lia

Hi Ann,
The mirror effect in Herbert lake is an asset to the composition. The trees are a natural frame to the lake. The point of view takes our eyes toward the mountains in the background which is giving depth to the photo. The light is well managed and it is enhancing the colors of the scenery. Have a nice day.

Bonjour Ann,
beaucoup de naturel ici et bien moins de post processing, j'aime mieux ce genre de prise de vue plus simple, mais qui n'est possible que sous des lumières amicales.
Excellent POV et cadrage, un merveilleux paysage.

Hello Ann!
Great reflections you've captured here: only Canada can put on this sort of display, eh? I too would love to be able to make a return to the Rockies in the Fall of '09 - it's been 'ages' (2 years!!) since I was last there!
Best wishes,
Jeff

that rock in the foreground fits well the title :)) nice shot, the mirror-perfect reflection is almost iconic, and I like a lot how the mountains, forest and the reflections create neatly arranged triangles. good luck with planing the September trip :) I've never been to the Canadian Rockies, but the place is pretty high on my "to go to" list.
regards,
Kristine
