Photographer’s Note

I took this photo on a beautiful morning during our drive along the Icefield Parkway on the way to Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

About this photo: During our stay in the Canadian Rockies at the end of September and the beginning of October (2006) we stayed a few nights in Golden, BC and the other nights we stayed in Jasper. On the day that we would be leaving Golden to drive to Jasper we got up fairly early so we could take all day to drive the Icefield Parkway to Jasper. This way we could take our time and stop at some of the viewpoints.

While we were driving we could see a beautiful sunrise, so we decided to stop for awhile and enjoy the changing colours of the sky. At this spot I noticed how this cloud was hanging in front of the mountain. I also noticed how the sun was hitting the mountain peak, bringing out all the details...I just couldn't resist to take a photo. This was the result of the sun rising that beautiful morning. I can't remember where exactly I took this photo, but it was somewhere along the first part of the Icefield Parkway.

Some information on the Canadian Rocky Mountains: The Canadian Rockies are located about 800km (500 miles) east of Vancouver on the border of the province of British Columbia and Alberta. There are 7 National Parks that belong to the Canadian Rockies which strectches out over an area of 25,000 square km (15,625 square miles).

These are the National Parks that belong to the Canadian Rocky Mountains: Mount Revelstoke National Park, Glacier National Park, Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park which are located in British Columbia and there is Banff National Park, Jasper National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park which are located in Alberta. This amazing area is known for its beautiful blue-green lakes surrounded by mountains, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls and a diversity of wildlife. One can enjoy the endless views and there is a great variety on walking/hiking trails for everybody to enjoy.

Some info about the Icefield Parkway: Dramatic mountain vistas, huge walls of ice, beautiful lakes, and spectacular waterfalls make this one of the world’s classic and most beautiful mountain drives. The Icefields Parkway (French: Promenade des Glaciers), also known as Highway 93, is a scenic road in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Canada. It parallels the Continental Divide, traversing the rugged landscape of the Canadian Rockies. It travels through Banff National Park and Jasper National Park linking Lake Louise and Jasper. The parkway is 230km/143 mi in length and was completed in 1940. It is named for features such as the Columbia Icefield, which is visible while traveling the parkway.

The parkway is very busy in the summer months of July and August with peak traffic flow of 100,000 vehicles per month. The parkway is primarily a two-lane highway with occasional passing lanes. The highway is well engineered to minimize grades and hairpin turns but drivers must also be on the lookout for wildlife, touring cyclists, and vehicles stopped on the shoulder. Extreme weather conditions are also a factor, particularly during winter. A national parks permit is required to travel on the Icefields Parkway. There are stations near Lake Louise and Jasper where you can buy these permits. Info from Wikipedia
