The Well Worn Stick
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
One of the rare beautiful days we had while working out of a small tent camp in the Northwest Territories. You can see all the snow still around even though it's the beginning of July.
I really enjoy taking pictures of relatively normal objects in focus in the foreground with interesting backdrops. |

Nice shot Mel! I hadn't thought of the NWT as being mountainous - for some reason I'd imagined it all as being flat tundra... I think I'd have called this one "ballet", as the stick reminds me of a ballet dancer with arm outstretched!
Speaking of the stick... You're right, it's a good focal point - it's an interesting shape, and it definitely provides counterpoint to the background - but I wish it were a bit "tidier". I think I'd have been tempted to bend back the branch coming into the left hand edge of the frame for example - you could clone it out if you wish though. That said you'd be equally valid in saying it's another dancer holding out their hand for the other ;) I sometimes wish I had a pair of scissors/secateurs/loppers with me when I'm out photographing - particularly for telephone/power lines ;)
As for the DOF, I think you've chosen well, you've isolated your subject without losing its context - the background still contributes to the overall composition.
I'm undecided whether I'd like more sky above the stick though - part of me thinks yes, it's too close to the edge of the frame, and part of me thinks no, the twig would be cast adrift if you had more... If you did have more sky above it, I think you'd need to crop a bit off the left hand side too.
Anyway, a very good capture :D
absolutely love this photo! i think the perspective using the stick is quite cool. keep up the good work! post some more pictures!
