Photographer’s Note

Often tourists visiting Canada are keen to see a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer dressed in their red serge. I believe they are part of the Canadian culture. Yesterday, 4 officers where killed. This is the worst loss of this magnitude since 1885. I post this picture in honor of those four who died. It is part of the red serge uniform which is the dress uniform of the RCMP. Often tourists ask if this uniform is worn all the time. Some of you may have watched the T.V. show, Due South. This uniform is only worn for special occassions. I am not sure if this is the correct site to post this photo, but I believe some of you will be interested. A lovely memorial ripped right from the headlines. I like the bright red jacket contrasting with the desaturated background and hat. Well framed. Very sharp. Interesting still life composition. Bravo!

I hadn't seen your tribute when I posted mine, I only learned of this event this morning at work. I feel like an ostrich up here some days, all that was on the radio was blizzard closures... I find it hard to believe this did not make the local news!

You have a very worthy photograph here as well. I'm quite interested in how you did that - taking the colour out of everything except the serge, as the hat has also been converted to black and white, has it not? This is a very professional expression, full of emptiness but also professional pride. I hope this is also shared with other officers.

We don't all have a RCMP uniform on hand, is this yours ?
