Busy Airport Photo

Photographer’s Note

The light today was what we call "flat light." I drove the ski-doo out to the airport and you couldn't see the bumps which is spooky. Those of you who ski know the feeling. Both the sky and the land are white. Difficult to tell where one begins and the other ends. I took this picture through the window of the airport. The beehive of activity interested me. As people were getting off the plane, cargo was being unloaded and preparations made to refuel. In a small community like Clyde River, the airport is a social gathering spot. The coffee is always on. When a plane arrives, we often go out to see who is on it or who is flying through to the next community.

Good write up. I can't quite tell, but are you shooting directly to the sun in the photo? I wonder if it might have helped to meter a bit lower down (not that I know where you metered the scene), or increase your shutter speed/close down the aperature. The photo seems to be a bit small and lacks some clarity. I'm not sure why that is - was it modified? The foreground snow is delightful, and the northern flight experience very true. Which aircraft is this one... not the twin otter and not the hawker...

I hope someone who shoots more in Black and White can give some more advice here, I think you are doing a super job in moving to b/w especially for the north in winter, but I think it has some demands that I don't quite understand. I'll be interested to know though.

Hi Vera,
Well framed with this foreground and "white out" for backgound, good choice also for the B&W to give an original and very cold atmosphere. Well done.

it's true that there is a lot of light, but i don't think it makes the picture any less good...it gives the effect that the plane is leaving for nowheres, which is kind of true in the northern Canada (just kidding!).
