Rock and Hole Photo

Photographer’s Note

When I saw the latest post from Bibiweb, it makes me think of our own arch and I've decided to dig into my archives to find this one.

Percé Rock is one of the largest and most spectacular natural arches in the world.

When Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence river, it seems that the rock was linked to the Cape and that there were four arches. As years go by, three of those have disappeared, the last having collapsed on June 17, 1845. It is estimated that the current arch will also disappear in 400 years.

The real exposure time is 40 seconds, with a neutral filter equivalent to 8 stops added density.

The quality is impressive and the place looks so quiet and peaceful - even water looks ice-like ;-)I've got the impression that the object on the left is not appropriate here, breaking the harmony - was it the ship?

On dirait un iceberg. La pause longue donne un aspect incroyable.. la mer est si douce..
La photo en WS permet de bien se rendre compte de l'importance de ce rocher..

Superbe composition avec un ciel aux couleurs fantastiques. J'ai eu le plaisir de visiter ce lieu et tu me rappelles d'excellents souvenirs.

Hi Andre,
Beautiful saturated colours. Special rock formation making a bold silhouette. And classic composition.
Icy looking water surface created by long exposure. That's a matter of taste, but I'd prefer to stick closer to what eyes really see.

Salut Andre,

hard to believe at first that this is a picture and not some high quality painting. The belnd of colours is awesome with a good transition of warmer to cool to warmer tones. Excellent perspective with the massive rock formation taking a strong focal point. This is a place that surely look great anytime of the day but your image makes it magical and special. This is a respectful invitation for eyes to enjoy from a pure nature that framed by you in a great way and created as a photo perfectlly with a fine composition,congratulation for this admirable result !
The faded colors and the combination of colors says everythings here which well reached by you.the silhouttes of the wonderful rocks are well placed in the composition.only a small dark piece in the side like a boat/ship or mini rock(!) a bit disturbe it but it's not an important thing as a major flaw.
and about timing you worked skilfully in f/16 and 40s,graet one !

Hello Andre,

When I first saw this I thought I was looking at an iceberg, it shares a similar profile. It is a shame that these features collapse without warning but it is all natural process. In Victoria (Aust.), there are several of these formations. Two have collapsed recently - one arch called London Bridge collapsed in 1990 isolating some people who were on the far side when it fell. The other was one of the 'Twelve Apostles' which fell in 2006.

The scenery here looks like that of another planet. The alien landscape feel is helped by the multi-coloured sky, pale, silky water (which here resembles land as it is so solid) and odd geological formations. I did not notice the small boats and pier until now. Great inclusions! Terrific image - the shot is superb. My only question is, what created the thin grey line on the horizon which runs the length of the photo - it seems to not go behind the rock but instead in front of it. Is this a merging point? Interesting.

Souvent, s'attaquer à des sujets très célèbres et particulièrement esthétiques donne des résultats décevant, où rien ne distingue particulièrement la photo. Ici, c'est tout l'inverse. La pose longue, les couleurs, la silhouette, la composition qui laisse une large part au ciel sont autant d'éléments qui font que cette photo est excellente. Bravo.

hem hem, avec un titre pareil ca risque de deraper ca, comme image...
Mais sinon tres belle realisation avec ton carre vert prefere, je vois qu'il est venu accompagne du trepied et du filtre qui va bien. Jolie couleur chaude pour mettre en valeur le caillou (pas le 24-70, celui la il en a pas vraiment besoin vu ses qualites !) et beau glacage de l'eau.

les couleurs sont superbes, que ce soit le ciel ainsi que la mer, quelle belle image!
comme le rocher est petit (dans l'image s'entend), ce n'est pas trop grave qu'il soit tout noir.

Hmmm, nice. Like one big slab of ice! And then the colours. Some soft reflections. Very interesting, the reflections of the right rock. You can see how the light has absorbed part of it in the reflection.
Vari-ND. Never heard about that one! I'll have a look! Does it mean that is has two gradual colours?! Nice!!

US, Canada, France, Austria, Italy, Cambodia and Switzerland...
Even looking only at your last page, one can easily claim that you are a true wanderer André, regardless of your profession.
I wonder in which order you upload your photos. Opening the image drawer, selecting any fine image, looking at it for some seconds, remembering the sweet memoirs of your past vacations, daydreaming about the forthcoming ones, and then clicking the upload button...
I just imagine the reality, but you present the surreality here. I can't guess why you had to wait for Bibiweb photo in order to decide digging into your image drawer.
This is a ture painkiller, and would go perfectly on the wall of a psychologist's waiting room.
I know something, that i wouldn't be able to wait for 30 sec. to make this photo. You have the nerves...

Hello André,

Un très bon titre pour ce monument qui semble flotter à la surface de l'eau tel un navir échoué ! Les couleurs sont réellement superbes dans leurs douceurs et leurs teintes chaudes ! La surface de l'eau ressemble à un miroir !
La vue que tu as plaçé en WS mérite également le détour ! Quel joli coin ! Le bords de mer semble superbe et majestueusement coloré !
Un vrai plaisir !

Superbe, André!La combinaison longue pause-filtre dégradé donne de fantastiques couleurs et un aspect glacé à la mer des plus esthétiques.

La vue en WS est sublime également et aurait fait une moisson de points sur TE

Bonjour André,

je ne sais laquelle des deux image (avec le Ws) critiquer. Elle sont tellement belles et différentes. La magie de la photographie! Celle-ci donne l'impression d'un iceberg alors que l'autre semble être au bord des côtes britanniques. Pour une fois, heureusement qu'il y a des nuages..; Avec un ciel uniforme, cela n'aurait pas donné grand chose, alors que c'est merveilleux comme cela.

Ah ah le titre ! Bon, euh, bref...
En Normandie aussi on a des jolis trous (les trous normands donc)(blague locale), comme les très réputées falaises d'Etretat, mais alors là, c'est hors concours des rochers de cette taille.
Impressionnant de beauté, et tout est mis en oeuvre dans la réalisation de ta compo pour le sublimer.
Magnifique réalisation, bravo.

What wonderful colours! There is still so much blue left in the sky and it combines beautifully with the vivid orange. The ND did a great job. I also love the silky smooth water from the long shutter speed. You should also save the Ws for another day as a main post. It's a great photo too.

Ciao Andre! You have thosand critiques already, but I can't resist. Your photo is not simply beautiful, has something more in itself, maybe because of the long exposure, maybe because of the composition with the horizon line so low... it seems to belong to another time, a parallel universe.

Just beautiful, André, and how could you store it in your files for so long, this needs to come out of the dark to be shown and to be admired with "wows and ohhs". This is gorgeous! The colors and clarity are perfect, and the very long exposure creates such a magic effect on the water. It almost seems as if there is a perfect right angle forming on the horizon where the sky meets the water. The black silhouette is beautiful against all of the bright colors in the rest of the frame. This photo definitely should have come out of the archives sooner!! :-)

You have created a remarkable photo of one of my most favourite scenes. I have traveled along the Gaspe Peninsula several times, and have never been able to go past Roche Perce without stopping to photograph it. I have never been there at dusk, so your shot is a true gift - Merci

Excellent one, Andre, the different red hues in the sky are relly fantastic, differing from cold to warm, and fine that you could even capture the shadows of the rocks (!) on the still water...

Grandiose!!! Au début, j'étais persuadée qu'il s'agissait de glace et non pas d'un "caillou" ;)
Heureusement que tu as posté un version de jour en WS.
C'est un paysage fantasitque, avec de très belles couleurs matinales, et un temps d'exposition parfait.
Dommage que ce si beau caillou disparaîtra un jour ou l'autre...

Haha, very similar to my post. We both have the same compo, but you have a more colorful sky with nice clouds and I like the effect the long exposure has on the water. With a 40 second exposure I'm surprised the clouds aren't blurry. The "capthaddock view" workshop is also a great shot.

I have been here in 1993. Unfortunately it was not so sunny and clear.
But I liked that trip to Canada. The silouhette here has something mysterious, contrasted by the clean sky.

Je ne suis pas une grande fan des couchers de soleil, mais celui-ci ne peut pas me laisser indifférente, la mer si calme et le ciel strié donnent un aspect très simple et à la fois exceptionnel à la composition, le tout avec ces couleurs merveilleuses est vraiment très bien présenté.

bonjour andré,
je compulse fievresement ta galerie à la recherche d'images sur le Quebec car je dois me rendre prochainement dans ton pays pour un periple de 17 jours.
c'est peut être une des meilleures photos que j'ai pu voir du fameux rocher.
