Photographer’s Note

I am back at the icefishermen village.As you can see,it is a clear sky,the weather is comfortable at -3c,no wind.The party is going on,whole family at the cabin,the folding tables are outside with the BBQ on the table(not on the ice unless you want to try to catch a new kind of fish)and grilling meat.A young mother jogging on the ice and pushing the running pram,a teen practicing with its motorbike,skidoos and cars,all this on the ice.No wonder that nobody was catching fishes,as they had surely moved away.It did not matter,they were having fun.
Talk with this fisherman,who agreed for a photo,only if he was not recognizable,he approved the photo when shown.In the foregroung,you see the "brace or brace and bit"used to pierce the ice.This fisherman is fishing with a pole,hardly visible here.

De retour au village de pêche sur la glace.La journ.e est magnifique et comfortable,-3c et sans vent.
Beaucoup d'activité sur la glace.Une mère qui court en possant le carosse du bébé,un ado qui se pratique avec son motocross,quelques motoneiges,des autos et surtout les réunions de familles et amis.On a sortie des tables sur lesquelles se trouve un BBQ(à ne pas mettre sur la glace sauf si vous voulez inventer une nouvelle sorte de pêche)et on grille la viande.
Très bonne recette pour que la pêche ne soit pas fructueuse comme c'est le cas aujourd'hui,tel qu'expliqué par ce pêcheur qui a accepté d'être photographier à la condition de ne pas être reconnaissable,Il a visionné et autorisé cete photo.
Ici,il pêche avec une ligne à main,peu visible sur la photo.
En premier plan se trouve le villebrequin motorisé pour percer les trous dans la glace.
Une très belle journée.

Cette photo est très belle. Il s'agit de mon activité hivernal favorite. Je pratique la pêche sur la glace une à deux fois par semaine. Je me reconnais dans ce tableau. Merci de partager avec nous. Bravo.

Hi Charles, This picture has well shown the fun of ice fishing. You have to work hard to drill a hole on the thick ice. Then, you can sit there relax waiting for the fishes to bite your bait. I can image that it is not bad with -3C degree under the sunlight is fun. It could be no fun if it is a windy day though.
Nice capture of the entire scene. I enjoy this story telling shot with a beautiful pleasant day on the ice. A well taken picture with nice contrast and depth.

Salut Charles, un style de pêche peu pratiqué chez nous, quelle est l'épaisseur de la glace. Le cadrage est très bien. A+

Bonjour Charles,
Mettre l'engin à percer des trous dans la glace est une très bonne idée, j'aime bien aussi le beau temps clair et le coté relax du pêcheur qui va finir en esquimau glacé si il reste immobile ( à moins qu'il consomme du sirop d'érable), tout ça c'est vraiment Canadien et c'est très plaisant à regarder.

Hello Charles,

didn't the fisherman have a license, because he wouldn't be recognized on your picture ? The drill we see on the foreground, I used one a few weeks ago for making holes in the ground (to plant some trees), but it hadn't a motor on it. Je vois que ces hommes sont bien équipé là. Ce sont des professionels ?

Hi Charles. You know from the thumbnail the auger looked like a TV camera to me. Weird eh? Again you've retained the bright snow in some equally bright light. What's neat here is the streaking sky. Nice catch Charles!

Voila encore une vue lumineuse par cette belle journee ensoleillee d'hiver, j'aime bien la balance de cette image entre la foreuse et le pecheur, je pense qu'il aurait etre possible d'accentuer ce point en visant plus bas et en incluant moins de ciel ?
J'espere que le pecheur a emporte qqch de fort pour se rechauffer pendant l'attente ;-)

Jusqu'a ce jour je ne connaissais pas l'existence de ce vilbrequin qui est bien mis en évidence; le pêcheur est en second plan; des déjeuners au grand air brrr j'ai froid !
Un sujet fort intéressant.

J'aime bien ces scènes de pêche blanche ... pour le cadrage peut être qu'une visée plus basse aurait permis de voir le vilebrequin planté dans la glace.En tout cas bien vu de l'avoir mis en évidence dans ta composition.

Hi Charles,
This is actually a very impressive shot, which you would not have guessed from viewing the thumbnail! The unusual brace and bit is perfectly placed in the foreground and in good focus, allowing the eye to then wander about and take in all the different activities. The streaks of cloud in the sky seem to blend perfectly with the snow and contrast of course with the alluring blue. The relaxed and pensive fisherman on the chair seems placed in a surreal world - he should be huddled and shivering! All of the fine textures and grooves in the snow further enhance. Each time I look at the shot I see something new. Very fine work, Charles. You conceived this shot, I think, very carefully. I think you should start a new theme of "Ice Fishing." Shots like this really fulfil TE's mission.

You say that I could be seasick with my Azores boat voyages but with this snow and -3 I really go to a summer hot beach that I like also :-)))

No problem and this is a sharing voyage and I like your posts and you photo boat by your creative view and personal insight. So, my words for a nice capture in a vertical format from your perspective and signature. Fine colors, enquadrement of the scenery and a simple way to capture distint things in different angles. Very well seen, doine and composed by YOU.

Il faut drolement etre equipe pour aller pecher le poisson ;o), une photo sympathique qui nous explique comment ils procedent. J'aurais penser un temps plus hostil, mais effectivement -3 c'est une bien belle journee.
Si tu as besoin d'infos sur le Perou n'hesite, si je peux etre utile pour quoique se soit.

what a curious scenario. I wouldn't have had a clue what was going on here without your interesting explanatory note. The scene is an interesting collocation of unusual objects - this drill, and the man sitting on a chair. An interesting and different point of view - thanks for sharing!

Bonjour Charles,
un magnifique ciel, polarisé comme il faut. J'aurai cadré un rien moins haut pour appercevoir le bout de cette foreuse à glace.
Il ne doit pas faire fort chaud à rester assis comme cela, question d'habitude tu me diras.
Beau clin d'oeil sur une vie bien différente de la nôtre.

Bonjour mon ami Charles,
L'on peut dire que ce n'est pas une pêche ordinaire ! Le harpon ou similaire a été remplacé par une sorte de vilebrequin pour faire des trous dans la glace !
Une photo très originale et fort bien présentée.

Charles bonsoir - j'aime beaucoup cette photo qui nous apprend beaucoup de choses : comment pêcher sous la glace, comment est la machine à percer les trous ... c'est super et en plus c'est joli - le ciel est iddylique et les patineurs semblent s'en donner à coeur joie au fond - une photo vraiment très très sympa et pleine de bonne humeur

J'aime beaucoup celle-ci dans votre série sur la pêche sur glace. J'aime particulièrement l'homme assis sur sa chaise attendant que ça mordre. La patience est sûrement une virtue à la pêche. J'ai été l'an dernier à la pêche aux petits poissons des chenaux à Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade et j'ai reçu le trophée de la patience. J'ai pêché une bonne partie de la journée et je n'ai rien réussi à prendre!!! C'est bien l'inclusion du villebrequin. J'aime la diagonal du villebrequin à l'homme derrière. Merci!

Salut Charles. Looking at the recent entries in your album, I liked this one a lot for the literally "cool" storytelling. Nice framing to have the ice drill in the foreground, and one of the guys seated behind - the way you constructed the photo also gives a nice feeling of perspective. Good handling of the exposure to make this winter scene look very natural and genuine.

I am a fisherman almost every weekend, and I can't pass this photo, because I would like to try it one day. This kind of fishing is amazing! I would like to see the fishes you catch from this ice! I just can't believe!
Your picture is nice, showing nice winter sky. Its nice to see the gear to make the holes in the first plane and the seated fisherman in the second! Nice sharp details and depth. Tfs! Cheers!

Une image qu'on ne trouve que dans les pays nordiques comme le tien, pour moi j'aimerais vivre au moins une fois cette sensation de pêche sans canne, assis sur un lac ou fleuve gelé. Ta composition est superbe, elle permet de découvrir l'engin faisant des trous dans l'épaisse couche de glace et les pêcheurs sous un soleil magnifique.

Great shot Charles, great composition,as a thumbnail I guessed what the situation was but overlooked the drill and began to wonder how these men managed to get to the water. Obviously on opening the image all became clear. Thank you.
A very nice image, the light is great, keeping all the definition in the sky and more impressively in the snow.
Well captured.
Please see what you think of my shot of an English fisherman, a nice contrast to this mans style.

ahhh, ça fait vraiment hiver ça Charles!! C'est vraiment bon!! Le vilbrequin et le ciel cadrillé sont vraiment cool! Avec ce cadrillage, ça donne l'illuion que le ciel est comme courbée dans le centre vers la terre...Je sais pas si je m'exprime bien. Tu as essayé la même scène en horizontal? Ce que j'aime bien c'est que la compo, c'est toi qui l'a faite, dans le sens où t'as pas pris un paysage comme ça qui est là et où il faut contrôler la lumière. Ici, tu as dû prendre le temps de bien te placer et d'inclure le vilbrequin. Vraiment bien!
Avec tout ce boucan, j'imagine que la pêche a dû être moyenne? Quelle peut être l'épaisseur de la glace?
