Photographer's Note

This modern building on the University of Toronto's downtown campus was built in 1962 as graduate student residence, a congenial and intellectual environment for graduate students of distinguished abilities. The buildings was designed by celebrated architect Ron Thom (1923-86). This picture only shows its exterior, but its interior design also unique. The design won several awards, including the prestigious 'Prix du XXe siècle' in 2013 from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Their citation reads as follows: ”Massey College is a skillful and humane interpretation of Arts and Crafts sensibilities in a modernist idiom. It is remarkable for its seamless integration of exterior and interior design, including the rich detailing of its custom furnishings and fittings. It has aged well, and is one of the University of Toronto’s most treasured modern buildings.”
