[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The David Dunlap Observatory was officially opened on May 31, 1935, attended by such people as Sir Frank Dyson, former Astronomer Royal of England, and Mackenzie King.
The current 1.88m telescope is the largest astronomical telescope in Canada. The mirror is one ft. thick and weighs 2 tons. It is the first large telescope with the Pyrex mirror made by Corning Glass Works in 1933. The telescope tube is 30 ft. long and the moving parts of the tube and the mount weigh 25 tons.
This is situated 10 mins. from our home and it is rumoured that it will have to be moved Northwards to another site as the town lights are becoming too bright.
As you will note this image was shot on November 2, 2005. Now, October 1, 2006, the trees and leaves have already reached the stage of color seen in the picture. Fall is early this year.

Hi Roy,

This is an absolutely gorgeous photo. I also live about 15 minutes from the DDO and have stood in this exact spot many times. I am always amazed at the how varying seasons and light conditions make the DDO look new and different. But it isn't light pollution that will do in the Observatory -- it's the fact that University of Toronto wants to cash in on the high land value of the area. This is a broad-based group of people trying to preserve the DDO and Park land. More information can be be found here: http://www.rhnaturalists.ca/save-the-observatory

If you have a Flickr account, you would be more than welcome to join the Save David Dunlap Observatory group to share this photo.

You can also sign our online petition if you would like to keep the DDO and park around: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savetheddo/
