Photographer’s Note

This is the Library of Parliament on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The Library is the main information repository and research resource for the Parliament of Canada.

Taken handheld, on a bitterly cold, blustery day in Ottawa as I walked past the Parliament buildings on the hill down towards Portage Bridge. I took this in colour, with a view to turning it into black and white as I like the use of B&W for gothic architecture like this.

This is something fairly new for me, as I haven't really taken many architectural shots like this in the past so I really welcome your opinions and suggestions on this one.

Hi Simon,

I log in and who is the first picture I see. Yours. You have done pretty well with the exposure here. A bit over exposed in teh sky, but that doesn't matter in B&W. I like that you have zoomed in to a specific part of the library as opposed to trying to fit it all in. Leaves me wondering what the rest of it looks like, which is a good thing.

Great composition with the building filling the frame, wonderful detail and I agree it looks fantastic in B&W, you have achieved great tones here.

Hi Simon,

I think this one is my absolute favorite of your Ottawa series. The monochrome applied to HDR really draws us into the details on the Parliament building. I'd say go with the flow and maybe overexpose the sky completely to accentuate the building even more. Just had a quick play with levels and posted a workshop. You could do a more elegant job on the high-res file than this but it is an interesting option.
