Photographer’s Note
Taken on Rememberance Day last year at the Cenotaph in Ottawa. The day was bitterly cold (to me anyway, probably not by Canadian standards!), and there were very large crowds for the memorial event with the Cenotaph itself being closed to the public for all of the offical guests.
Having watched the ceremony and the subsequent parade, I returned later to the Cenotaph to take this shot. I thought the sea of poppies over the memorial, combined with the flowers and the candian flag made for a very strong image with real contrast between the reds and the greys.
The Ode of Remembrance
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Hello Simon,
This is a strong image that reminds me that patriotism is not limited to my own American culture and there are just as strong feelings by the people of other countries. It is just not a popular theme, especially with countries other than your own these days. At least that is how it is for us in the US. I am a veteran and know how I feel on our Veteran's Day - I'm certain Canadian vets feel the same way. We have all sacrificed much for our countries, some gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Aside from the patriotism your photo instills, I find it well composed, sharp and with a great depth of field.
I have a special affinity for Canada and Canadians, if I would live anywhere else I would live in Canada. I feel your patriotism, too, and wish you all many regards.
Thanks for sharing!
