Photographer’s Note

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes -193 miles long and 53 miles wide, with 726 miles of shoreline.

Just off the western shore of Lake Ontario, between the cities of Hamilton and St. Catharines, there rests a nautical enigma. The little-understood landmark is a large wooden sailing ship, which lists strongly to one side as it half-rests, half-floats only a few meters off the shore in a small artificial cove. From up close, one can see that the vessel was once a floating restaurant called La Grande Hermine (The Big Weasel), after the ship Jacques Cartier used to sail up the St. Lawrence in 1535.
A major fire in 2002 all but destroyed the ship, leaving only its rusting metal shell listing in the Jordan harbour.

A very impressive shot, Alana!
Very good composition, positioning the wreck off center to the left (to open up space for it's protruding masts) and to enhance further more the depth feeling you get from the wide angle and the clouds above. Splendid and full of atmosphere!!

Very nice warm colours contrasting with the ethereal sky. The composition is great with the leaning mast - its like an abandoned ship and mysterious. The sky and the reflection really give a depth to the image I think

I really like your photos Alana. The only negative comment I would give is that as is often the case with HDR shots, those nasty halos appear quite often. Likewise the chromatic aberrations around the edges of objects. These can be avoided though, by creating several HDR shots with differing light settings then using them as layers in Photoshop to create even tones. It's a little more work but the results are seamless. I'm certainly not perfect at it but am finding the extra effort makes a big difference.
