Photographer's Note

Driving back to Peterborough from Ottawa along Highway Seven today, we stopped at a picnic area beside the Salmon River to let the dog run around. My sister (who is a very good photographer with a very nice SLR camera) was walking around taking pictures of the lily pads and such when she nearly stepped on this guy, who went and hid in the grasses by the river. We managed to get it to move again, and we confirmed that it was a water snake when it began swimming away. Well, we wandered away and I later returned to see the snake back in the grass, hiding, and with my lowly point-and-shoot, I think that I managed to get a nice photo of it.

From what I can figure, this is a Northern Water Snake. It is a protected species in Ontario, but not rare, and its range covers the place where we were. It amazes me how many snakes there are in Ontario. I had always thought that there were garter snakes, which are found everywhere and are reasonably common, and the Massassauga Rattlesnake (Ontario's only poisonous snake), which is rare and only found in a few discrete places. But in recent years I have learned that there are actually quite a few different species of snake in Ontario, even some quite close to where I live, but most are rare. But other than the garter snake, I had never seen another wild species of snake in Ontario. I always find it funny when I learn of some of the incredible things that we have in this province, where I have lived my whole life and which I love, but which sometimes seems rather staid and boring when it comes to its nature and wildlife...
