Photographer’s Note
We stayed at a B&B near Bathurst that was situated on 40 acres and needless to say I got lots of images this day. It was a misty day that provided a beautiful even light. That light made the colours really pop. I took two shots (on Fuji Velvia) one in focus and the other out of focus and both overexposed. I then remounted both slides together to create the Michael Orton effect. If the leaves look soft they are supposed to be. I was trying to create what an artist might do. I have also printed this image on metallic paper and the results are even better. Hope you like it.

Phil,
I do like it...nice work. My wife is a watercolour artist and this looks very much like some of her work.
Good job

Hello Phil,
You gave us a wonderful description of the processing done on this photo and even if it is a bit...old style,I enjoyed it a lot.
Nowadays,in Photoshop you can do it this way, too:
1.Duplicate the background layer and let`s name the new layer:"Dreamy"
2.Change the blending mode for the "Dreamy" layer to "Soft Light" or ,for even more effect,to "Overlay".
3.Apply a Gaussian Blur,about 30-40 pixels,for a high resolution file.
4.Adjust the "Dreamy" layer`s opacity to your liking.
5.At this point you are done,or,if the shadows are too dark, apply a "Shadows & Highlights" adjustment to that layer.
Does it match your result?:)
Thanks for this wonderful photo,
Nelu

Hi Phil,
You have managed a very unique and intriguing effect by merging the two images together somehow. I can feel a sense of mystery and the artistic rendering probable. This is a real shift for me, being one who likes things crystal clear and sharp as a tack, but I like it! Very well done and TFs. Gerald

Hello Phil,
The colour composition is splendid and the white of the trunks of those birches is excellent between all those green, yellow and red tones. Well done.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Phil,
Your Orton effect procedure has created a wonderful dreamlike atmosphere: everything really appears to glow and the tree trunks in particular have an almost ghostlike translucency. It clearly required quite a lot of work to get effects like this in pre-digital days!

Hi Phil,
Wow! that's an interesting technique, and done the hard way with film and slides! I've not heard of this effect but I'll be sure to give it a go. Like you say, it does create a dreamy effect and the colours are really intense because of the HDR type work and velvia. The tree bark looks a little neon to me, so perhaps I would have darkened them down a little before posting (or is that cheating?!)
Thanks for sharing, yet more ideas from TE

Hello Phil,
Unusual color and lighting just like a paint, just full in poetic flavour, I like this colourful corner growth with variety of plants, very nice species of trees in white trunk, thanks for sharing impressive autumn view.

The colours really are beautiful; it's unusual to have such intense greens at autumn time and the contrast with the golds and oranges is stunning. I'm just wondering if the trunks are a bit on the bright side, but then aspen trunks are very bright. Your double exposure was a success I think.

This is one of my favourite techniques and Phil you are a master of it even via the old-school way. Well done. There's a lovely damp, misty feel to it and the overall colours and textures are a well composed rendition of autumn/fall. Regards from Florida, Tim

Hello Phil,
A photo almost unreal, if I saw one of the most famous impressionist painters, sure the copied. The colors are gorgeous.
Best wishes,
