Photographer’s Note

This picture is taken in Antalya, the old city known as Kaleici. This is the entrance of a restaurant surrounded with beautiful flowers. I don't know their names. They don't smell anything but the outlook is great! You can widely see these flowers in the city.

Let me tell a few words about Kaleici:

The center of the city, which is surrounded by the sea and the ramparts, is called “Kaleiçi” today. The streets and buildings of the Kaleiçi bring the traces of the Antalya history to our time. The importance of the old buildings transfer very useful information not only from the architectural point of view but also in subjects of the way of life, attitudes, traditions and social aspects of the human beings.

The streets of the Kaleiçi are very narrow. Mostly they reach from the port up to the hills through outer ramparts. The buildings may show varieties according to the economic powers of their owners and their usage purposes. But they have many common features. Generally they are built out of massive stones and as wooden tie. All of them have a street front and a garden that is not facing the street. There are very few windows at the façade facing the street and at the first floor. The ground floor is mostly the service section of the house. Rooms that have functions such as store, kitchen are placed here. The upper floor is for living. It takes more light since the windows of the upper floor are much bigger.

Most of the houses in Kaleiçi are restored in accordance with their origin. Today Kaleiçi has become as a tourism center where entertainment places, pension, restaurants, shops selling souvenirs and antique carpets are placed.

Once the Antalya port was the second port after Mersin at the southern coast of Turkey where ships could be approached. Today, however, only yachts are able to benefit from it. The name of the old port has been changed as “Yat Limanı” by commencing the Industry Port that was constructed west side of the City.
