As my last (now) photos from Turkey I chose the views from Eminönü. It was my favourite place in Istanbul.
Eminönü is the heart of the walled city of Constantine, the focus of a history of incredible richness. The Galata Bridge crosses the Golden Horn into Eminönü and the mouth of the Bosphorus opens into the Marmara Sea. And up on the hill stands Topkapı Palace,Sultanahmet Camii and Aya Sofya. .
Although the government has moved to Ankara and Istanbul has expanded to become an enormous city with the centre of business in huge shiny buildings elsewhere, Eminönü is still buzzing with activity. It has the busiest ferry crossings for the Bosphorus and for the Marmara Sea, and the only mainline railway terminus (where trains can be caught to Eastern Thrace (Trakya) and Europe). People keep streaming into the area on boats, buses, trains and the light metro from Aksaray.
During the daytime the area is packed with merchants and their customers, hordes of shoppers and many tourists. hawking goods on handcarts, makeshift stalls or a blanket laid out in the street, as well as the millions of little shops and workshops in the streets, bazaars. Every inch is retail space, even the underpasses taking people from the ferries are lined with shops, kebab grillers and boys selling cigarettes. Predictably there is a fair amount of pickpocketing in the crowds. Nearby are splendid pieces of architecture;
Süleymaniye - the huge mosque complex of Suleyman the Magnificent;Yeni Cami (The new mosque) - the mosque that dominates the waterfront by the Galata Bridge; there is a wide open space in front where people feed the pigeons. The Grand Bazaar - as much to look at as to shop in. The Spice Bazaar - another Ottoman caravanserai, not as huge as the Grand Bazaar but right on the water, next to Yeni Camii; Rustem Pasha Mosque -
small but real gem.
Amazing place that I would recognize even with my eyes closed: the very strong fish smell is there all the time.
Also Gert like this place very much so I dedicate for him this photo and other two in Workshop.
I would like to share more photos from Turkey but my nature (aka IF) doesn't allow me. Instead of staying in warm home, I prefer walking in cold and rain.
Strange thing, I tried several times but can't post any Workshop. I can upload a photo but then it doesn't appear. I will try later.

This is a very attractive photo. A lot of interesting elements to explore within and between the market foreground and the city background. The colours and light are quite interesting as well. Nice inclusion of the seagulls to break up the sky.

I just know that Gert will love this photograph - people everywhere in this huge bazaar or marketplace, filling the foreground and standing out perfectly against the brightly lit distant view of the city. Gert loves pictures with lots of people in them!
There's just so much to see and examine in detail in this picture when viewed at large size on "beta" TE, the light and colours are excellent, your exposure is perfect and the clarity is superb.
As always, a very interesting note from an inveterate traveller!

An image to linger over with so much to see and all in excellent detail. I like very much the point of view and the contrast between the busy market area in the reground and the city landscape in the background. Lovely warm colours and lighting contribute much to the atmosphere of the composition. I can see why you like this spot so much. Thanks for sharing.

Je suis d'accord avec toi en ce qui concerne un des endroits les plus intéressants d'Istambul. Une vraie marée humaine, colorée et vivante avec un arrière plan qui jouit d'une luminosité magique.

hello lucia. so, you are heading to liverpool tomorrow? i wouldn't also mind further sitting at home, if i ever forgot to serve liters of ayran in a turkish night :)) as i usually am in search of some simple subjects in photography, i end up passing by crowded scenes like this, but seemingly i do miss a lot of things. yes, crowded as it is, but has also the weird harmony of colorful chaos. i do enjoy your slight saturation. have a nice trip to the british isles and don't forget turkey.

this has an almost Canaletto feel about it. So much to look at and just a fascinating mix of elements and detail. It works superbly and I have to say is an original little beauty of an image. Stunning!

Thanks for your dedication. Yes I love this area and I love this photo, for what it shows and for the magic light and atmosphere. Strangely enough I don't think I've ever taken a picture from exactly this position. I have been either closer to the water or further away:-).
Have a good time in England.

Hello Malgo - You have captured the atmosphere of this area of Istanbul perfectly and just as I remember it. Busy and bustling with food carts and people and your composition with the Galata Bridge and view across the water to the distinctive tower, The late afternoon colours are also just as I remember. A wonderful memory for me of a city I loved. Warm regards Rosemary

Bardzo ładna scena o dużej dokumentalnej wartości, panorama Stambułu i kolorystyka i światło jak w pracach Canaletta,

There is a very special mood here, like we are looking a painting. A very sharp and detailed picture and a very interesting cityscape in the background.

Ciao e buona serata

Splendid market scene from Istanbul with the view on the city in BG and a splendid light. I like it!
macjake (49318) 2013-11-28 23:24
Beautiful photo!!!! And a well informed note too. I love how the sunlight seems to be striking the city in the bg but the fg has its own separate light.
So much is packed into the scene , and although there are lots of people i still love it. Really sweet looking overview of the city.
Looking forward to your UK pics :)

Now this certainly is a very beautiful picture of Istanbul.
It combines wonderfully a pleasant busy atmosphere at the square in front of the water with a golden view of the district with the Galata Tower. This is the kind of picture I'd like to take.
Some seagulls in the sky complete the image.
I also find the different kiosks with red or golden domed roofs an attractive sight. I cannot remember to have seen them when I was in Istanbul in the beginning of the 80-s.
This is a beautiful invitation for a re-visit.
Best regards, Paul

i agree, Istanbul is a fantastic place to visit. So much to see,do and explore. Interesting situations like this is never faraway. A well choosen spot for this shot. A good overview of the area but also many people who brings life to the scene, well done!
Have a nice evening.

This gorgeous photo shows Istanbul just the way I imagined it...sea, birds, a lot of people, marketplace, all sizes and shapes of houses all over the place....oooh, so fascinating and vivid. The rising or setting sun lights up beautifully the houses ( I think it is evening but am not sure). Good sharpness. Nice!
