Back in time again. This is from 1974, from the city of Doğubayazıt in the far east of Turkey, near the Iranian border. I have, of course, very vague memories of taking this particular photo but I have some idea it could be the view from my room in a very cheap and basic hotel.
Maybe these men were waiting for someone to bring them each a glass of tea. Maybe they were just sitting, having nothing else to do. Unemployment was high, this was not an economically dynamic place, to say the least, and lots of people had lots of time to spend.
Doğubayazıt seemed to me a very remote part of the world, but the kids had all recently watched the football World Cup (played in West Germany that year) and to my amazement knew all about the Swedish players.
I think this will be my last upload for a while. I am planning another journey and hopefully I will soon be back in this part of the world. More or less.
I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide.

A very nostalgic shot especially for me. Back then I was a 10 years old kid, I remember those days with a child's future confidence. Dogubeyazit is one of the most important touristic places offering too much opportunities for photographers. I'm sure you've visited Ishakpasa Palace and Mt. Agri too. A great documentary photo, thanks for reminding back. Have a pleasant and safe journey.

A topclass "oldie" from my beloved country !!
Not only the capture but also the scan is perfect.
As you can see on my pages I do not have much favorites here but I'm going to add it now !
Let me add some more informations to this wonderfull archive peace :
The footwear of the elder man at right is one of those typical handmade goatskin shoes. Whic was very commom at those days, but now been replaced by cheap shoes made in China.
And the woolen socks is most probably handknitted by his wife or daughter. Also those socks are no more available. Those are also been replaced by cheap nylon socks -also- from China !
What can II say more ... Those were the days !
One last word : Don't stop and go ahead with your "oldies" . This absolutely makes the difference here at TE !!
Many many many thanks for sharing this beautiful oldie (and of course the previous ones)and
my warm regards from chilling cold and rainy İstanbul !
Believe me or not, we just put fire on our fireplace and enjoy the nice warm play of fire !

An excellent shot !
Corresponds to what my own eyes have seen at the same period
But I was in Istambul 2 weeks ago and I was quite amazed that things have tremendously changed
Bravo for this one, like it very much

I agree completely with Mesut here; this is a topclass oldie! This is a very well composwed picture and perfectly cropped. I enjoy the subdued but very harmonic colours too.
Hälsningar från Tyskland
PS Ha en bra semester själv

It is a wonderful shot of a remote area especially at that time.
CanmoreKevin (2111) 2012-05-20 19:20
This has a real "back in time" feel to it. How can you not love the socks on that guy on the right? Seriously though, I like how the two figures who are obviously together are completely ignoring each other. Great capture.
emka (99901) 2012-05-20 23:24
So do you go to Turkey? Have a great time and many beautiful new photos!
Excellent shot from the old times. Everything is old here - walls, chairs, door - and the men. The door seem closed so they probably are just sitting. I do not know if the unemployment is so high but in southern countries, like Greece, Egypt and many other - during the day the men are just sitting. And the women have never free time.
great documentary shot. Simply wonderful, like all your oldies.
Warm regrads MAlgo

You succesfully continue to make us travel back in time, your pictures are like the product of a time machine.
The white of the table and the shirt should be a by product of the scanning process. The pose is very typical, and made me wonder whether it is timeless and spaceless, because we may find variations of this pose in the Aegean coast nowadays.

Almost 40 year old, but maybe a picture as well as today, much change in these countries, must not expect of these countries.

Well, when I look to the Map of Your Photographed Countries, I see not a lot of white places.
An interesting historical report before EURO-2012. Good capture of an Oriental ceremony of talking. Only real men, without stupid women.

They know how relax and kill the times and their postures seem to suggest that as I am drawn to this picture. Their colors, prop, placement and pose all contribute to the picture so very well detailed, crispy sharp in excellent clarity and colors. But I love the rustic feel and atmosphere and all the grittiness depicting the actual situation then, as the elements work smoothly together. This is a sight with the oldie yesteryear taste to it, another excellent doc, shot of street people picture so well recorded vividy. Well done.
Have a safe journey

Hello Gert ,
Another great "oldie" . If it was a picture of today , we could think that the man on the right is looking at his mobile phone ! Of course not , propably they are talking quietly .
Excellent quality of the scan .
Thanks for teh share .
ourania (47048) 2012-05-22 11:30
this is a great composition from a downward point of view that captures the scene and the mood of the moment superbly without being percieved by the two subjects or disturbing their peace and naturalness. I like very much the way their presence fills the frame surrounded by information and textures, wonderful colours and lovely light. I also like their natural postures amid the different coloured shapes all around them. This scene would be so rare today. The two men are tranquil, not depressed. People had a different sense of time back then, maybe they appreciated important things much more. A wonderful picture, congratulations and thank you!
All the best,
patdeph (35748) 2012-05-22 12:30

You're capturing well this daily life shot by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle that two men are spending the time calmly sitting the chair and having nothing else to do. their clothes and hat seem to typical Turkish style. A natural good daily life shot.
Have a nice day.

there are so many elements to be seen and appreciated in this little frame.
look at the mans socks, look at the lock on the door, look at the strange silver paneling on the top right.
lots to see.
hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip!

Good old shot:)! - the old door and chairs, the men calmly talking... I really like the calm moment and the details! You must have great stories of your visit to this old Turkey.
Have a nice journey:)!

Hello Gert. Take life as it comes, - accepting the passage of time. I like this photo very subtle. There is a photo as a narrative. Here is all focused on the essentials. Overall, a successful shot. Rgds, Wolfgang.
agjika (3177) 2012-05-26 16:09
A very nice "as it was" photo. The men do not seem to be aware of you at all.I love the old tones and the mood.
Thanks for sharing
Angshu (56758) 2012-06-19 9:23
A nice daily life scene...people just lazing around! The quality of the scan is excellent as always even after so many years. I doubt whether anything has changed even now in those parts. Well framed & depicted shot!
annjackman (21899) 2012-06-20 12:01
Another wonderful trip into the past and could even be older than 1974 - it is almost timeless with the impression that things had not changed here for several years. It asks questions about the circumstances of these men as you suggest in your note. Wonderful!
Kind Regards, Ann
Wanda1 (15142) 2012-06-21 23:39
A great one from your archives of Turkish daily life, and according to me nothing much has changed, one still finds scenes like this all over the place in Turkey, men sitting around small tables - chatting, playing games and sipping çay or Turkish coffee. Love the rustic surroundings and the man on the rights socks ;-)
bebbetto (40) 2012-06-24 8:25
This is a beautiful document. A demonstration that analog pictures still have a lot to say. I think you had a good zoom. The quality is rather good and the composition is perfect.
daddo (26874) 2012-07-15 3:53
Hi Gert. I understand your point about unemployment, but nevertheless, the art of just sitting is a thing of the past in most urban settings for even if people are sitting, they are Sm-sing, texting or interacting with their laptops. And with all of the above, the art of conversation is also in peril. Interesting details of their attire. Best wishes. Klaudio.
COSTANTINO (66166) 2012-07-18 8:07
simple shot taken from an excellent chosen point

This is a nice scene, well observed and photographed by you.
I like the grain and old furnitures here.
A pitty that the white tabletop is new....

J'aime beaucoup ce genre de photo.
Un instant du quotidien des gens immortalisé sur un cliché.
Belle ambiance et beau traitement de l'image.
jmdias (65105) 2012-10-18 7:08
very nice framing catching these 2 men in a natural position. I liked the position of the chair and tables here too. excellent light and sharpness. nice job with these personages and their clother something out of time, the same my grand father used in 1960.
KristinsCamera (2384) 2013-09-02 19:14
i love discovering these gems of yours from past travels :)
and this one is great, and everything you say in your note. such modest circumstances, portrayed so poetically that i almost hate to spoil the moment with words. so i think i won't this time. except to say that the angle of the pov is particularly intriguing, the colors are so full-bodied, and his socks are just amazing.
a wonderful capture, gert ~
