Sorry I haven't been very active lately due to an extremely heavy workload.

This is a follow-up to This Photo.

During my last update regarding this subjet we had an interesting debate regarding cultural differences and perceptions.

I agree it is hard for me as a westerner to know how female muslim society works as I have no access to it. I can only limit myself to observations and guesses which may or may not be accurate.

It is true that for us westerners, the idea of seeing women covered from head to toe with a black cloak is almost a synonym of oppresion. Then we have to ask ourselves: is this cultural pressure? is this a choice? is it both?

Personally I have a hard time understanding how someone who cannot even show her face in public can play an active role in public life, but clothing its only the beginning of the issue. Yemen has a very high level of teenage marriages and one of the highest rates of female fertility in the world coupled by a very low level of education for women.

I will not pretend that I understand fully what is going on beneath the surface, and I know that it is not up to us westerners to push change, but that social change should come from within a society, however I do think that women are somewhat oppresed there and to me the black ghosts are a symbol of it.

Hi Daniel, a repost? Or maybe I saw it in PH. Anyway, it's a fascinating photo, with the shadow well applied on the right, to echo the strong silhouette of the woman in black, skillfully making her look as a shadow too, consistent with your message. Tilt well applied. Cheers ;) Daniel

The black figure is a very good subject, and it fits very well with the colored door. A very nice street scene.
Very well describing the place
regards Stefano

Excellent work Daniel, really well captured, tilt also works well and add dramatic appeal, an important social document.

have a nice day,
Fabio.

Great composition, very creative . I like very much the black silhouette and the blue door. The tilt also works really well.

Bonjour Daniel,

Bon retour avec cette belle scène rue.
Beau travail et beau symbole avec le jeune garçon en pleine lumière et la femme en "ombre chinoise".
C'est un beau résumé de ta note et de ses interrogations
Bonne Journée
Marc

ONLY 1 WORD: MAGNIFICENT PHOTO...
ALL THE BEST..

Dear Daniel,
This is a great photo with a great note.
Besides the photographical assets, it has great meaning.
In my gallery I have a similar photo, but I confess that the tilt of my photo was not given on purpose :) It is quite an old photo in fact, but I was tempted to take the photo of a covered woman in the beach.
Thanks for sharing this with us and have a nice week,
Hulya

Superb photo with the woman like a black stain or a kind of ghost against the sunny and the colourful street. I love the tilt as well. As for the note, I don't think we can talk about a "choice" in some countries where it is strictly forbidden to go out without a veil.

Indeed, this should be an incomprehensable approval of oppression for Westerners. But i guess, this is a regular daily life routine for them, no need to think and debate any more (actually, it was never an issue of debate, i guess).

Their life has been like that, for thousands of years. Who is to change it, and why?

Trying to open their closed minds, would be as harsh an apporach as trying to close open minds. But revolutions do this. Revolution, either positive or negative, creates an interface in society. An interface of adaptation. And only the interface suffers, the rest, the next generations are content. Because their minds are already shaped inside the revolution's laws. They just obey it, without questioning.

I appeciate your note. They better stay as they are and Westerners better go and take their photos without so much interference. And it is our issue to question the situation. We, the countries, which are close to the interface...

I love the feel of this image...and I so get the shaddows aspect. Well done.

Bonsoir Daniel
J'aime beaucoup tes images du Yemen. Celle ci est splendide avec cette ombre qui passe. Cela donne une atmosphere très belle.
Amicalement
Bertrand

Hi Daniel,
You are mentioning a serious issue, which becomes almost global.
As tehanu_f says, it is about legal status in some countries rather than choice. You are so true about the fact that how a woman can play social role in society in such black cloak. Living a social life is really gruelling, almost impossible for them. There are extreme countries where walking in street without a male (I am not talking about an adult man, it may be a boy) is strictly forbidden for women.
Despite legal obligations, there is a minority trying to live their own lives. But these women face lots of difficulties. I once read somewhere, women climbers expose dangerous situations in mountains with their cloaks coiling their instruments. There are women drivers causing traffic accidents while they are trying to fix their headscarves in panic.
As you see it is not only a limitation of “hiding body” when you are talking about a social life. It is exactly restriction of life. That’s why most of these women remain as “shadows” just like in your photograph.
I know, understanding such a life is very hard for Westerners. But it is not easy for us who stay in between…
