Manakha is located in the Haraz mountains, 85 kms (a good 2-hour drive) from Sana'a. It is located at 2300 meters above sea. As far as you can see there's mountains, smaller ones, bigger ones, and about 90 percent of these mountains are covered with terraces for agriculture. Not all of them are used anymore, because lots of locals have moved to the capital and there's just not enough people left to work all the fields. On every hilltop or big rock a town was built, for protection against enemies in the past, incredible constructions, it is mind-boggling how they managed to build them all ... and then : the fields and hillsides are so green, it seems unreal, as if it was painted on.

It is difficult to take a picture because once you've seen it with your own eyes, no photo could ever do it justice. This one was taken during sunset and I was rather lucky to get some clouds as the sky in Yemen tends to be just blue and blue. I have taken few photos only of the valey but it looked too flat as a result, I've tried to find some frontal point of interest to make it bit more interesting. I will never forget that amazing atmosphere when I took this shot. There is a prayer 5 times a day in arab countries. The last one is just after sunset. So you stand there with amazing nature in front of you and with arabic prayers coming from close by Manakha mosque and from other mosques in surrounding villages... I still hear it... Allahu Akbar.. Allahu Akbar..

Hola,
nice colours, but specially a very nice composition. I like a lot how you have balanced the picture, with this "flowers" on the left, and all the valley on the background, giving an incredible depth, and the scale of this great place.

Well done,

Best regards,

javier

Hi Lucie,
A great shot, I like a lot this landscape, excellent light, but the colors I think (only a few) too saturated. Well done.

Hello Lucie,

Tu as saisi cette scène au moment décisif ! J'aime beaucoup les teintes du ciel et la brume qui diffuse cette très belle lumière dans le fond de la vallée ! L'avant plan permet de créer un effet de profondeur !
Bravo !

hello lucie

wonderful light... and you are a master of timing and capturing that. an awe isnpiring sight. and the idea about allahu-akbar chants does enhance the mood. i know exactly what you are talking about. we had similar experiences in morocco. very early mornings (around 5 am): the deep-voice prayers resonating in the city and the walls of the riad we were staying at. those sounds have never left my head since. i am sure, in such a setting it's even more enthralling.

back to your picture: a big thanks for sharing it here.

Wow, the mist in the valley is gorgeous and creates a nice depth. You always capture colors at there best, and here the sky is just wonderful and I love the lavender color of the mountains.

Hi Lucie.

I love the tones in this shot which I find strong, yet delicately muted. Wonderful composition and exposure technique. A fantastic shot Lucie!

Best regards

Robin
