[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
An elderly gentleman passing his time on a sidewalk in Sanaa after a light meal, his granddaughter (I guess) sitting beside him. Like almost every other Yemeni man he keeps his curved dagger, jambiya, inside his belt. A jambiya is not for fighting, it's not even sharp, it's purely an accessory and without it a Yemeni man would feel only half dressed, like a Western businessman without his tie. The design of the jambiya is supposed to show which clan the owner belongs to.
A scan of a Kodachrome slide. Canon F-1.

Hej Gert,
A very fine portrait of the old man and the young girl and the tray as a connection between them. Is it a message on the wall or just ordinary graffiti?

Hi Gert
Wonderful street life scene with young and old - so simple and natural. I like their looks as well.

Joanna

Hi Gert ,
This place Sanaa is one of my favorite destinations to travel and I think you captured a real Yemeni daily life .
I really love pure expressions on their face .
As your note tells ,Jambiya to Yemeni men is what tie man to Wetern business .
Thanks for sharing nice picture and note .
