In the main street of Sanaa, capital of Yemen, there used to be a number of bookstores where the books were spread all over the pavements. Most of the salesmen were young boys, like this one.
This photo from 1998 was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

bella scena ricca di dettagli, il ragazzo sembra imbarazzato, ma è molto espressivo, un ritratto ambientato molto suggestivo.

What a wonderfully engaging shot, with the young book seller seated to make the scene more compact. The surpassing scan is sharp enough to allow reading the titles of the books. I cannot refrain from extolling the virtues of the old Kodachrome film (presumably Kodachrome 64).
Incidentally, in googling one of my books I was surprised to see it in an Arabic title. I don't read Arabic, but I asked Didi Massoud to translate it. It turned out to be a pirated Farsi Edition, appearing at the bottom of this page. Atousa was kind enough to translate it for me.
Warm regards, Gert,

Hello dear Gert,
Another perfect capture, another nice daily life scene from Yemen.
The young boy surrounded with many books (most probably of religious content).
The grean leafes in front of him is most probably the stuff the Yemeni's like to chew, like a chewing gum.
He has noticed you and is smiling.
TFS and best regards

Boa noite Gert
Very nice moment and an excellent register. He seems happy. Maybe because the books are being sold.Excellent.
saxo042 (37724) 2012-03-11 23:45
The straight repeated lines of all books provide a good perspective. The boy in the middle add the usual human life in your photos. The cover at the top left looks quite interesting!
emka (87538) 2012-03-11 23:54
Nice bioy selling all those books. Pleasant view, excellent sharpness, the scanner did a good job. The books on the wall look all similar, nicely edited. These on the pavement are cheap paperbacks. I knew Arabic letters and could read a bit (with no understanding) but when not using, forgot it by now.
Warm regards Malgo

Another fine photograph scanned from your collection of Kodachrome slides.
A well composed shot with lots of interesting colours and shapes, the young man perfectly placed amongst them. Excellent detail and clarity too.
It is interesting that the books displayed on the wall behind the bookseller all appear to have similarly designed covers, quite different from those scattered before him: I wonder if the ones on the wall are of religious content?
patdeph (35748) 2012-03-12 12:01

In the near future, books will be a thing of the past. We are now using Kindle and other electronic device for reading :(
Wonderful shot once again and good quality scan. I love the texture and grain of the traditional film quality.

Hello Gert. Book sellers, books. A photo with all the trimmings. Beautiful colors, good technical quality. I like the friendly look of the boy. My compliments for this successful shot. Best regards, Wolfgang.

this is a charming image. The boy is quite cute, hansome even in a boyish way.I like his enigmatic smile.Pity I can't read arabic or Yemeni or whatever gthe language is because browsing book titles is one of life's pleasures.
Thanks for adding it to the book shop theme. And thanks for thinking of me.

Good Morning Gert,
This tells us so much, not only about the retailer but, also, about the climate. It would take a brave man to spread all his books out on the pavement in England!
A nicely angled shot to act as a guide into the photgraph where the focal figure is well placed and looking into the shot.
Have a lovely day,
Nicou (131494) 2012-03-14 9:04

Another one of your classic style! I makes me dizzy thinking that these books are read from right to left etc..!
Nicely framed by the repetitive pattern of the books. I also like the expresson on the young man.

Great street scene and wonderful colors. Stunning composition bravo ihsan
eldancer1 (32826) 2012-03-17 9:23
Advanced countries would scream about child abuse if young children are seen working for a living but the reality in third countries is that everybody, young and old, must contribute in order for the family to survive. Nice documentation of the daily life and at least the young boy seemed to be smilling. Well done, tfs.
jemaflor (90107) 2012-03-17 9:42
Well taken, good composition with the young seller, good light and sharpness, tfs.

Another fine collection from yr serie, a young vendor plying his trade, cleverly display in a small compact space. His look attracts the eyes with good variety of shapes, colors and sizes to choose from. vibrant and full of detail and so much to look at which really brings this place to life. The cheery colors are really attractive and make a lot of different. Compositon makes for me so close to the subject to accentuate the overall impact and you have made the display really stand out. The dignity shines through, but I love the feeling of 'life' conveyed, this makes one really feel the atmosphere of being there and so full of cultural detail. Brilliant shot, TFS

Beautiful picture of this proud young bookseller. The golden covers made a perfect BG and the sharpness is excellent, we could be able to read the titles. A nice natural scene of life.
fotka (3983) 2012-04-10 7:27
It is beautiful 14 years photo from from capital of Yemen. Good quality of daily life shot. Great composition with young bookseller located in the center surrounded by the books. As a scanned photo good colors, light and sharpness.
kato (11630) 2012-04-30 2:06
You're capturing well this street phto by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the spectacle that young boy is selleing books on the pavement and the heart hurts. It is not desirable that the situation where a small child works by every time and prospers the social roots of the trouble. With this photograph, a child's bright face is help.
ourania (37398) 2012-11-28 10:18
I like very much your low point of view at the level of the sitting boy. This has allowed for a great composition portraying the little book seller surrounded by his books both as merchandise and cultural reference. Your light and colour management is great. His intelligent eyes and subtle smile make his expression intriguing and engaging. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

I see the second capture of the street bookshop from Asia in your gallery on this week. Good contribution to the theme. The interesting portrait of the worker in his interior, good colors, fine details. Perfect quality for a scanned slide!
Have a nice weekend!

Wonderful daily life-picture of this boy completely surrounded by his books.
Attractive colours. Specially the books against the wall with their titles in gold make this shot so beautiful.
Judging from the twigs in front of the boy, he has been chewing khat.
Best regards, Paul
