From the vegetable market in central Sanaa, Yemen. I took this picture in 1998 and have scanned it from a Kodachrome slide.

Hey, hey ...another old timer I remember from a few years back. Good to see you still posting. I gotta say, I'm not really overly crazy about the shot, but it's definitely a study in scarlet and oh so reminds me of the scenses I saw in Sana'a ...so for that, it's a great one. I bet these scenes are getting fewer and farther between now, but I guess I'm going to have to go back and just see for myself maybe...

Hola Gert ...
Lovely scene of young tomato seller in the market of Sanaa, the atmosphere is well captured, the definition is good and perfectly natural color, congratulations on the pic.

Good evening, Gert,
My compliments! As always, excellent photo. Perfect quality for a scan. This boy has got a turkish cap (feska). I think, Sana and Yemen are not the safe places for tourism today. Good register.

CLODO (27504) 2012-02-19 8:35
A good market picture, ful of colors, with the young seller checking his tomatoe. The person dressed in white in the background is disturbing because too eye catching.
ourania (21482) 2012-02-19 8:36
I like very much this composition, half the cadre filled with lovely shiny tomatoes and the boy's movement while doing his work. I love the clarity and bright colours as sunlight is filtred in through the tent. A lovely colourful capture of daily life, thank you!
All the best, have a good week,
saxo042 (35202) 2012-02-19 9:18
A very red picture with a perfect balance between the tomatoes (or apples???) on one side a the red fez on the other. The boy, with his outstretched arm, is also well balanced with the shaft to the red umbrella behind him. A very good picture indeed.

As always I find the scanned image of yours a real treasure. They have a strange life and colors which I am unable to find and produce.

The vegetable markets in Middle East are always one of the main attraction areas for photography lovers. They are always interesting, colorful and alive. This one is no exception. I adored your composition, the FG in this image is so powerful with contrasting colors of red and green vegetables and a boy seller with a striking fez. Great details in the BG too. The lights and shades are also very well balanced. I have a great respect for your old photos, most of them have great stories and this one is a very good example. Thanks for sharing. have good Sunday eve and week.

che bella foto, una luce molto particolare che mette in risalto i particolari della merce in vendita.

This really is a testament to just how good Kodachrome really was and how excellent are your skills in scanning and copying old transparencies.
The smartly dressed young man in his fine suit jacket is perfectly placed in the frame and his bright red fez draws our attention to his face. His outstretched hand then takes us to the huge pile of colourful wares he has for sale.
Wonderful varied lighting, fabulous colours and impeccable quality.

I like your series from Yemen very much. Interesting photos from the places I do not know anything about. Nice view of all these red tomatoes, in the rather oblong shape, some still not ripe. They look hard and delicious. The red cap ( we call them fez) is eye catching here. very nice exotic mood. I could spend hours strolling in the markets. And I like when I am the only tourist. Excellent scanning.
dkmurphys (44090) 2012-02-19 23:56

Hello Gert. Another photo of your series on the Yemen, - it is dominated by the color red well seen and realized.
danyy (0) 2012-02-20 3:16
on ne peut pas dire que cette région manque de fruits, il y en a à foison et de toutes les couleurs, frais et appétissants qui plus est. De très belles couleurs fortes dans des lumières bien gérées.
kato (10593) 2012-02-20 4:41
This is an interesting daily life shot, so it's interesting and impressive to see vegetable market which has arranged the fresh article. It's impressive in mostly red and partial green of vegetable as well as the boy who sells ones, too. The whole is balanced well by a good composition and rich color tone.
agjika (4319) 2012-02-20 7:20

A red composition, absolutely beautiful. Having dynamism by the movement of the little boy. Good contrast of red and green. And a little apetizing i have to say.

The red theme really holds this picture together. I especially like the red hat and the smart clothes of the young man. The scan is excellent and kept a lovely shine on the vegetables. Good to see a daily life image from the Yemen.

I Chose this photo because i like the way that the fruit/veggies are flowing all over the frame, and they continue to fall off at the bottom and the side - as if they are never ending.
great colors too.
adores (32184) 2012-03-11 19:20
Seems I've been missing some of your latest ones, so I'm taking this one now! It's a very good and different market scene! You captured him in action, putting everything in order for the clients. I like his pose, the red bucket full of tomatoes and even his red hat. So much red here, seems everything matches! Good capture!
faubry (35373) 2012-03-12 3:49

Hi Gert, Super scene you have ctured so well, the shaded light makes the atmosphere, splendid colours are they mangoes.? Well managed from a scan. cheers Iain.
abmdsudi (35366) 2012-03-20 2:54
Vibrancy of colors play a big role to alert the senses in this market. Compact shot full of vibrancy as we are drawn to this strong elements and you have used this opportunity to grab the moment beautifully in his own environment. Attractive to view his expression, the natural clothing with local flavor and lots of stunning glossy reds. A great work with a candid shot finding the interest in people going about their everyday lives. Well done

you know, Yemen is the reason I found and then joined TE :)
I was looking for pictures on Yemen and found some by marine (eversmile) and that led me to TE...
it's a country I always wanted to visit but I am always too worried (or let's say frightened) to pick as holiday destination.
I know I said it many times but the way the old Kodachrome slides make you "feel" colours is something almost tangible. I have not found anything yet in digital photography that makes me feel like that.
there's a beautiful ray of sunshine on the boy's face that highlights his presence against the busy background. I definitely love the tomatoes, red and green, chaotically piled up as they should be on a market stand, defying order and geometry and the exact opposite of today's supermarkets.
1998 seems like yesterday but it's already 14 years ago... where has the time gone?? :)
have a good Easter,
jmdias (49691) 2012-05-01 4:45

good morning, gert!
and thanks for your comments on my little dude with the broken christmas ornament :)
i have looked through your gallery and have chosen this lovely shot in red & green as my christmas eve smile to you ~ i love how the light falls on this boy's face, so thoughtful in his work and with his lovely bright red hat on. the man in the b/g seems to be peeking under the umbrella, much as kids want to peek at their presents before opening them. a delightful abundance of riches and color, nicely seen!
