[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Among the many spices and dried fruit on sale on the spice suq (market) of Ta'izz I also found this - carts and tables full of them.

But what to tell about this? It puzzled me on several counts:

They're fish - tiny dried fish - that much I know. To my untrained eye they look somewhat like anchovies (I've only ever seen them in a tin), but Ta'izz is in the mountains. So do they come from the sea and are transported here (after drying)? Or are they regional, not anchovies at all? I've been in several suqs and markets, but I've seen these only in Ta'izz.

Second: what are they used for? Are they eaten as a snack? Added to dishes to give them some aroma? A salty taste? (I had many local dishes but apart from fresh fried fish in Al Mukalla nothing that even remotely tasted like fish.)

If anyone can enlighten me, please jump in!
