I will try another photo from my journey to Yemen in 1998. This is a very ordinary street in an area of the city of Taizz, some distance from the centre. Nothing special is seen, just a boy going somewhere with his dad and two other men approaching. I just liked the quiet atmosphere of the area, far away from the noise and crowds in the city centre.
You can see a similarly ordinary street in Taizz in a workshop. Both photos were as usual scanned from Kodachrome slides.
And here is a larger version.

It is a picture with great visual appeal. The composition of the picture with the various elements is masterful. The little boy with his dad and the two men make it come alive. The old mosque with its sculpture and its dome against the clear blue sky in beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.

a fine candid capture of a daily life scene in the quiet alley. The architecture is interesting, the textures, condition and use of the building evoke mystery for me. I like very much the interaction of the child with his father, the approaching figures are fascinatingly mysterious too. I love the rich colours and the suggestive shadows. Shadows seem to be exceedingly important in your photos from this little known country, it would be such a shame to soften or remove them. They are integrated in your composition very well. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, take care,

I do not agree with you that there is nothing special about this scene - it is a real life out there and your photo very well documents it. The father and son have been captured unaware and they look so natural. The mosque is almost in ruin, but I bet it still serves very well to all inhabitants of the town.
I like the whole framing as well as properly saturated colors.
You managed this harsh light very well too.
Thanks for sharing

Hello dear Gert,
Also this oldie has for shure archival value. Again my beloved warm light and colors of old slide scans. The mosque seems to be quite old according it's stone carvings and details but the renovation is terrible.
TFS and best regards
willperrett (5134) 2014-02-12 10:51
I've scanned slides myself, and have also had problems with blocked up shadows: I guess transparency film didn't have much exposure latitude. Apart from this, you have succeeded in capturing a very effective street scene. As you say, little is going on, but that's part of its guileless charm.

Ciao e buona serata

for me it is the sheer simplicity of the scene that gives it such charm and appeal, with the design and architecture of the older buildings somehow being complemented by the newer gaudy sign and jumble of telegraph cables.
As usual the digital conversion has retained all of the qualities of the original slide.
It`s a fine shot.
Kind regards Les.

Hi Gert, Nice quiet corner of the street in Yemen captured in a sunny day. The architectures are old and wore out but they have beautiful design on them. I like its original look. Nice composition and light. Thank for sharing

Another good old picture with the mosque perfectly in place as effective focal of interest and a good view of people around. I love the rich deep colours and the polarised blue sky certainly makes this shot look great and contrasty with mass of rustic detail to absorb. You've kept that warm feel under the circumstance and very appropriate to the scene. Nice composition what I call in my own terminology a 'limited landscape' where one homes in on a particular part of what might be a larger view. What a life you depicted here & your pp work is splendid, Congrats.

danos (80945) 2014-02-13 4:25
nice the view as the presentation of this section of the place with the father and his son to are placed perfect in the frame. The colourful sign on the terrace is a good focal point of the image.
RhodieIke (11029) 2014-02-13 5:04
My goodness your image gives us a street view of this place in Taizz, and what amazes me is the Mosque is crudely made and squashed in to this street,I realize all over the world people worship in different ways and view their places differently, also money has a big part to play, so to speak. Tfs,
Great photo and well managed from a scan on a slide.
Subhogen (4035) 2014-02-13 5:42
A fine DL shot from the streets of Yemen . Like the simplicity of this shot capturing a moment between the father and the son. The deserted streets and the closed shops makes it look like quiet and peaceful. Had it not been for the attire of the man, I could have mistaken this as a shot from a dusty nondescript town in UttarPradesh or Bihar with a Muslim majority. Great quality of image for a photo so old. Thanks for sharing.

A very curious building.
I like frame and colors.

Good reportage work.
macjake (49296) 2014-02-13 7:36
these street scenes are always interesting arent they...but first of all, i guess it really isnt a 'street' as we know it.
I enjoy seeing the telephone wires, the signs, the attire and footwear, cool items to view.
whats next up yr sleeve?
BennyV (13378) 2014-02-13 9:41
First thought: this must be an old shot.
Second thought: no, it isn't, 1998 isn't that long ago!
Third thought: I'm getting old...
Lovely scan. This picture is absolutely worth its second life out here on the old internet. Thanks for posting it, Gert. A wonderful daily life scene with superb colours. Oh, them days...

You're capturing well this place by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see one of Yemen's city with Isramic architecture and exotic atmosphere. It's also impressive that father of little boy wears traditional white clothes with long one piece and the building has the roof of dome shape. This place looks like keeping a typical primitive life style, although I hadly know Isramic world.
adidas5nb (4005) 2014-02-13 23:18
i thought this might be a pic from before 1998. certainly a very fine pov and just love the exotic old elements in the pic.

interesting documentary photo from your archive. Good scan. Nice portraits and view of local mosque. Also fine colors.
Have a nice WE.
Royaldevon (24312) 2014-02-14 2:41
I posted a shot called 'Living History' but this one fits the bill even better. Only the telegraph poles and the advert can alert us to this being the 20th century. It is a wonderful journalistic shot of the area. The lead lines are a good guide, with figures strongly positioned. The textures almost jump off the screen!
Thanks for sharing this.
Have a great w/e,
mirosu (10942) 2014-02-14 3:26
Excellent snapshot in superb light. I really admire the quality of your scanning. I bought scanner as well but the photo quality is very poor.
Very well done.
Wish you a nice, relaxing weekend.
subhendu_bagchi (24375) 2014-02-14 4:22
another nice composition from daily life and this time it blended nicely with a nice architectural detail in background. Excellent management of exposer in such harsh light condition. The father with his child at right made this composition interesting. Tfs.

Nice daily life scene in a little town, nice document about a life in Yemen, very well captured

hello Gert, Fifteen years is not so much time but the photo looks well back in time. very strange this mosque, small, with no minaret and in rather bad states. The shape of the small domes remind me something :). Nice arch and the delicate walls decoration. It seems a hot day. Interesting street scene.

Thank you for sharing another of your images from this interesting country. These daily life photos are particularly interesting. As always, makes me wonder what this street looks like now, 15 years on. Has it changed? Has it remained the same?
Have a nice weekend

Hello Gert. Yemen - arabia Felix. Interesting people - even more interesting architecture. It is an adventure to travel to this country - this show with your favorite photos every day again.

Good daily life and very authentic picture of that village in Yemen Gert, an old mosque, a cobblestone street, almost a medieval atmosphere there, powerful light and high resolution, have a nice We
PaulVDV (19395) 2014-02-15 23:42
I've also visited Taizz. I don't remember this place but it looks like a typical street scene in a Yemenite village.
The white walls of the mosque are pretty dirty but when you look closer you see the fine architectural details of the building.
The man on the left seems to wait before walking by so that you can take a good shot of the mosque.
Best regards, Paul

Just saw the WS, quite a fascinating place and high buildings,,8 they quite deserve being post, people in general are not watching them)

Beautiful composition with the local architecture and people.
Transmitting information about the venue, with excellent exposure.
Angshu (53980) 2014-03-05 2:18
A nice DL picture from quite a while ago...I doubt whether the place has changed even now. The mosque is quite similar to the ones in India...the exteriors have worn away & the dome freshly painted standing out strongly. Good picture with fine details!
