I continue my journey to Yemen in 1998.
Judging from his red apron the small boy was working in this fish-stall. What his elder brother was doing there I don't know. Maybe he was actually the boss of the place. Or maybe he was there to make sure his little brother was learning the trade properly, or to protect him from angry customers and intruding photographers.
I saw these boys in the city of Taizz in southwestern Yemen. I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide and you can see a larger version here.

There are thousands of miles distance, nevertheless, we look like each other, this could also be a scene from Turkey.
I love the gaze of the proud and protective big brother. I wish i had one :) The "preaching" finger of the lady and the comprehending gaze of the little brother are also very well spotted.

Nice DL shot of the fish seller from Yemen. The big brother has made good eye contact with your camera while the younger is in apt attention listening to the customer. I like the assuring arm of the brother around his brothers shoulder. Wonderful to see such good quality old pictures from your archive. Thanks for sharing.

great scene and framing seems to be just perfect for it. I enjoy all the details of the composition, even the portioned fish :-), but what draws my attention first of all is the emotional content. The simple brother gesture says so much about the older one being protective and affectionate.
Have a nice evening

an interesting and lively daily life scene, a wonderful study of character and human relationships in a well defined and comprehensive context. I like very much the perspective, the elements and colours that surround the people, everything in the frame is attractive and significant. I've made up a story about the two brothers and the protective gesture of the elder one. He must work on the boat too, has been acquainted with the harsh demands and labour in the grown up's world and this has increased his tenderness towards his little brother who's heading there too. The elder brother is the only person in the frame who is directly looking at you and is linking the time and world of the viewer with his own. His gaze is captivating. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

Curious scene from daily life.
You have a rich archive!
Have a nice afternoon

Hi Gert, This scenery is too familiar to me as I visited Hong Kong last time. I visited the remote area which is called Tai O. It has the same type of fresh fish market services. The buyer always want to pay less and the seller want to get more. The endless price negotiation and a lot of noise. You have captured not only the brothers expressions and you have captured the moment of negotiation between the woman and the father as one can see the movement of the hand and the impatient expression of the father. Always with high quality of colours and composition. Best regards

Wonderful depiction of daily life. The big brother posed nicely for you while the younger one is possibly engaged with a customer. When I see your scanned photographs, I really the way colour is handled. Many say film was the better medium. Was it?
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice evening and week ahead.

Hmm, this is real Older Brother and I thought this is another version of G. Orwell's term ;) I remember this old kind of the scales in my childhood times. I have watched how the two noses got balance...
Today we can see only the boring electronic weight everywhere.
chrislo (4155) 2014-01-12 8:02
Looking at the faces, I guess this must be a small family business. Child labour is still a widespread reality there and remains an issue of serious concern. You've captured a nice and interesting market scene, showing that one is not a stickler for hygiene and sanitation. I like how the elder brother is quietly posing for you while the others get busy with the customers. A very good shot of a daily life scene.

Fish markets are grand places providing such a variety of subjects and this is an interesting and well photographed with a whole avalanche of bright colours, bustle, smells and flavours of this busy market place. Good details and timing too and I simply love this type of shot, you get what you see and a great insight into market life. He certainly don't look too happy! but he holds the right key - his eye connection is so Vital making to this shot. Well done shot and tfs :)

Ciao e buona domenica

another interesting slide from your archive. Nice portraits of brothers and seller. Good Yemen reportage. Photo I like.
Have a nice evening.

Good evening Gert - Your archives seem to produce an endless supply of fascinating shots, don't you think it would be interesting to retrace your steps and to see how things have changed in the intervening years? This young lad probably has his own fish stall now, that is my hope for him in any event but with the upheavals that continue in the region one cannot be too optimistic. The elder brother is impressed by your camera while the youngster seems to be dealing with a tricky customer! Lovely DL shot.
Warm regards Rosemary

Another lovely shot from your archive. Environmental portraits are ideal material for this site, and you have shown us a part of the world few of us are likely to visit for the foreseeable future. Excellent scan quality.

I wonder what these two boys are doing nowadays!
It is a most interesting shot showing the daily life routines of these people. I don't think I have ever seen such large fish for sale!
The photograph is very nicely composed, the customer creating a diagonal from l/r, whilst the fish stall follows the opposing diagonal.
My warm regards,

hello Gert, it could be the title Big Brother Watching. Another interesting shot from Yemen. I read awful stories under your other shot or on forum. i like fish stalls almost as veg and fruits. I do not eat much fish so i find interesting to see many kinds I do not know. I like the protective pose of the elder brother and how the young boy is serious with the client.

Hello Gert. Yemen - as it still is today. Such photos remind us of a country with many problems. The photo I like because it is realistic and looks authentic. The larger version is still showing more detail.

You're capturing well this scenery by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see business spectacle of the seller and the customer in fish stall. It's also impressive the unuform of seller and the scarf of customer. Probably, It seems that the big brother and small boy will be studying the trade in this stall.
eldancer1 (32075) 2014-01-14 7:54
One I thing I miss about my old country is the open and fresh market in town. Good capture of those brothers with good lighting and nice details. Well done, tfs.
UlfE (14641) 2014-01-14 10:56
mesutilgim (89124) 2014-01-14 12:39
Hello dear Gert,
Go ahead with your oldies ! This one is maybe not too old but a perfect scan !
Amazing to see the boy at right carefully listening to the customer.
TFS and have a nice evening

nikkitta (16790) 2014-01-16 13:53
Fascinating come back at the past with your very good scans
Mouving the way the big boy is watching you and protecting his brother that seems to be busy in conversation with a customer
Color and contrast are good, prevailing green, great work
What kind of fish is at the right corner? or is it a mux?
Miguel82 (26541) 2014-01-19 11:00
Tuna and a reef fish cutted by the guy with the red apron, an authentic and brillant market scene I like, the boy looking at you looks at ease and confident, perfect sharpness and vivid colors, thanks, see you
Angshu (56588) 2014-01-19 23:06
For sure the boy is being baptized into the trade...they all are...I have seen similar cases in India as well. Interesting picture from daily life...and as Deniz says, the picture doesn't change in India (or Turkey) as well.
Waylim (25368) 2014-01-21 11:26
It is really nice to go through the journey with you throgh the market today and what is that smell? Ah, those fishes. One of the very memorable momemnts walking through the market, the sight, the sound, seeing people, things and most of all the smell, good and bad. It is all part of the experience.
Wonderful shot with good quality.

Very good scene daily scene! That green door is a fantastic background and I like the details, the fish, te scale, their faces... Seems a really busy and authentic place!
Tigerlily (3301) 2014-04-27 12:18
Another slice of life story... very nice shot. The confident boss brother and looked a bit worried face of the younger one.. I wonder what's their life likes now.. after so many years.. I tried to read the words on his T shirt, but couldn't work out. Was it 'fish traffic'? :-D
jmdias (58956) 2014-05-06 17:50
