This is a re-post of a photo I first showed here in November 2007. I have rescanned it and hopefully improved the colours. The original photo was among my first attempts at scanning and I wasn't very good at it.
Here is my original note:
This is Bab al-Yaman, Yemen gate, the main entrance through the wall that encircles the old part of Sanaa. Just inside the gate is the main market place Suq al-Milh.
A scan of a Kodachrome slide.

It is a very well scanned shot, clear and sharp. I am surprised that in this busy place no-one seems aware of you and your camera; it is all the better for their ignorance, for it is a natural shot.
You have collected an abundance of details for us to scrutinise from a place that not many people have posted.
Have a good day,

A good scan of excellent quality to show us the life in Yemen in the 20th century
I bet that not that much has changed since then
mkamionka (34559) 2012-02-22 6:55
now you are without a doubt very good at it (scanning). I would not guess it is a scan. The quality is fantastic.
I like very much the vivid colors which make it really eye catching. Great composition with the street scene combined with a beautiful background.
patdeph (35748) 2012-02-22 10:57
this version is really better, it was worth to repost it.The architecture is splendid, and the crowd gives a nice animation.I am not sure that it has changed a lot.

Yes, your scans of these old Kodachrome slides are now excellent.
This is a wonderful candid shot of a busy street scene with an amazing anmount of interesting things to look at in it. People walking and chatting, the varied colours and styles of clothing, the rugged form of the gateway, the fine architecture in the distance and the market stalls.
Well seen and well taken with lovely vibrant colours, perfect exposure (never easy with Kodachrome which had very little exposure latitude) and good sharpness.

wonderful scene, the door to enter the old city is enormous, beautiful even the glimpse of the square with its magnificent palaces, great light, wonderful the result knowing that it is a scan
have a goodm day,

an interesting shot from a place that few of us have visited. Yemen is a country i really would like to visit, meet people and to see these fascinating "pepparkakshus" architecture. Clever to capture these men in traditional clothing in front of the unique architecture, a perfect contribution for TE.
Honestly, i love this photo! Tfs!

The new version is clearly improved with respect to colours. Still an interesting street scene and still no women in the new version.
kato (11630) 2012-02-24 1:34
This is an interesting photograph of this region, so it's interesting and impressive to see clothes of people who go a market back and forth and arabic architecture in behind. From this photograph, I can feel the smell of a life.

Hello Gert. I remember well the old city gate. This is where the busy everyday life. Here are the markets. Here craftsmen to wait a day job. But I also heard that even a few years on the wooden gate hung chopped-off hands of thieves. But since then, the Yemen made a step forward. Rgds, Wolfgang.

L’efficacité de cette photo est redoutable... la composition, les lumières, les ombres... et tout ce qu’elle dégage pour découvrir ce recoin plein de l'exotisme. Très beau travail.

Those houses are typical of Sa'ana & are made of mud if I remember reading somewhere. A nice peep through the gate with a busy FG. The scan quality is excellent & definitely much improved from the earlier post

What a scene! It looks like out of this world. Superb and very intersting buildings. Great composition and you have captured the mood very well.
abmdsudi (50430) 2012-04-24 18:34
Another slice of local life, good capture of street photography surprisingly in richer colors. The crowd is the main show with nice play of shadows entering the gate revealing the beauty in the backdrop as well its unique architecture standing in stark contrast to blue sky, and so much vivid details to absorb from fg to the far end coupled by those rich tones. Such a memorable shot and spice of life. Congrats, TFS
ourania (41132) 2012-12-21 8:31
the enhancement of colours and contrast has also enhanced the definition and clarity of details and has made the impact of the photo more immediate. But this was a great picture in the first place. I love the naturalness of the scene and the captivating sense of movement through the antique gate and against the marvellous scenery in the background. The fascinating luminous buildings are framed by the gate and the daily bustle, you've combined both themes superbly. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
