I know it's not a great photo, but it's the first one on this site from Aden, the second city of Yemen, and main port, formerly the capital of South Yemen. Perceived to be Yemen's most liberal city (that;s not saying much), even alcohol can be bought for private consumption, from an unmarked building along the waterfront, to the left of the Pizza Hut(the red roofed thing). This is taken from the fortress at the top of Sira Island, now linked by causeway to the mainland. Aden is one of the HOTTEST cities on earth, do NOT try to walk up here in summer. I think only Djibouti has a higher annual temperature. I also attempted an unsuccesful stitch which I will post to workshop.

I agree that it's not your best photo but still very good - the POV gives us a good impression of the city and its situation and I like the mass of details and variations in colour - I could spend ages looking at this. the randomly placed boats add a nice touch in the foreground. Nice to see this place just from a learning point of view too.

Intersting point of view of the city, which I knew by name(being at the end of the Arabian Peninsula) but that I would not have expected to be much of a touristic place. Neat picture.
All the best,

Your right, the picture is not perfect, but a view on this city is more than welcome because it is indeed the first one.
Your pov is pretty well choosen, it gives a nice look on the city.
The pano in the WS looks terrible, but nevertheless thanks for posting.
Have a nice weekend, Henk

I really like the POV and composition of this photo. The small buildings leading to the huge mountains in the background is very nice. The small, round piece of land in the foreground catches my eye. It is interesting to see Aden...complete with a Pizza Hut!

Very nice shot Tan.
I like this panoramic view from a country which not have so many photos. Great depth, nice colors. Good work!

Hi Tan, wonderful panoramic vew, excellent note,Many regards, Rafael
pboehringer (770) 2006-06-10 20:12
Yeah, right that is not your best picture, but who told you that everything has to be always topnotch. Just the fact that you're showing us here a rare place tells enough and the POV is terrific. The weather and light conditions didn't allow you to have your usual quality, but again, I don't care. TFS, Peter

fine overview of this city so different from the historic sites like Sanah.
The situation and atmosphere of the city are very well shown.
Thanks for another hardly visited part of the world, Gerrit

very nice one Tan.
good taken view, you said it not good taken, but I think it is not bad at all, a well taken panorama with good light, well done.

For me, Aden is a total revelation. I’ve never heard of this city before and that’s the beauty of this site. I fully appreciate this opportunity to make a new discovery.
The configuration is quite particular, between the foot of these hills and the coastline. Contrary to some other parts of Saudi Arabia, architecture is certainly not as impressive and the Pizza Hut seems to be the most exhuberant structure...
Even though you’re stipulating that this is not your most outstanding photo, I think it has a lot of value for the sheer coefficient of rarity. I also appreciate your workshop for the same reason.
rbcy1974 (20758) 2006-06-11 6:28
ALwya interesting to see new places, you have captured the urban detials very well. The place looks kind of modern compared to the photos that one sees of Sanah.
Very well done

Selemlar Tan bey!
Great background for this city! Your note is really interesting but PoV and also sharpness is stunning as for all your splendid images.
PixelTerror (0) 2006-06-11 16:21
Yep not your best but at least it has your trademark, the captain PoV ! I can't get away from this round structure on the shore, dunno what it is but is for sure eye catching, good to know Aden is liberal, although I would not come to the idea to get drunk there ;-))
Have a nice day,

Very interesting shot! You are lucky to see these amazing places and show them to us here on TE. I think it's a beautiful photo with great details of all the buildings. The clouds didn't seem to be your best friend on this day and created some haze on the top of the mountains, but that gives it a special effect in another way. Great composotion and beautiful sharpness!
kclai (2267) 2006-06-12 3:39
Your "trademark" of covering your subjects from high ground, and putting the feeling of "impact" into every shots of yours.
The city by the sea have been captured beautifully with the perspectively horizon at the rear. A very nicely executed shot with good PoV.
Cheers and good day, Tan.

Even if the esthetic aspect of this picture is not so high as in most of your other contributions, it's still very interesting because it makes us discover this not so well-known city.
It's a pity the stitching didn't work for your panoramic photomontage. Did you try to stich it manually with Photoshop?
Thanks for sharing.

I like a lot this view of the city. I find its location in front of the mountains very nice. The composition is good too, well done!

Hi Tan - another good elevated POV! The dark sky adds a heavy, almost oppresive effect to the shot. The brown hills & mountains back up your note where you tell us of the heat experienced in this place.
Editing for typos...!
Angshu (56190) 2006-06-13 3:26
This maynot be one of your bests, but surely one which is interesting. Your POV, as always in excellent...I don't know what's the round structure on the shore...my eyes go to it everytime. Marvellous colours (except the BG)as usual from you. The is not very good, but it does give an idea about the place.
quantabeh (5205) 2006-06-14 23:45
hi Tan, Interesting image and even though it may not have much of your signature colors to it, it's still compositionally superb. I like the overlooking and bare mountains in the back. This is interesting about the heat. As of all places in the arabian peninsula, I would have thought Yemen would be the most moderate in temperature.
neyse, thanks for posting.
AmiBe (6042) 2006-06-15 17:40
even it isn't your best shot, I like it very much.
Very impressive place, just between the mountains and the sea.
We can even drink one beer here ? Oh, I like definitively this place.
Stepan (27210) 2006-06-16 1:49
Not your best shot but a great place !!! I imagine that country and that city are realy impressive and I enjoy your pov here. It allows to appreciate the city and its environment, between sea and rocks. TFS.
banyanman (7789) 2006-06-18 9:17
This may not have the contrast and saturation that we usually see in your landscapes Tan, but it is still as good as 90 per cent of the landscapes that get posted to TE. As it is the first of Aden, it is definitely worth posting. Thanks too for sharing the stitched panorama for its 'educational' value. I would guess that some wind sprung up between the LH and RH shots and that altered the reflection off the water, making it almost impossible to stitch (although with a little use of the healing brush on the join in the ocean, you may have been able to get away with it). Cheers . . . Davi
quelquepart (810) 2006-06-20 9:40
I like informative POV, this site is also about discovering. And this picture shows how little place this city have to grow between the sea and the mountains.
zeca (19762) 2006-06-25 0:15
Nice view of this interesting place. Is it the water so dark or you´ve pp it? It looks like red wine at leftside! Nice contrast!
abulafia (4900) 2006-08-07 15:10
As on many of your other shots, you manage to find a great viewpoint.
beautiful scenery, i love the desolate mountains in the background.
kumbarov (210) 2006-08-23 15:17
In your note you say that this is not a great photo. It is not a bad one. Everything about it is OK. Thanks for the note.
