This photo is a result of me being part of TE for some time. It was here on this site, where I have seen my first picture of Yemen and wanted to visit this place ever since. I am not sure if it was photo of Shibam or Sana’a, however I am really glad I’ve seen it and had a chance to visit this country. As Shibam has turned into sort of TE meeting, I was challenged with coming up with a view that was not presented yet. There is no lake or pond in front of Shibam, I was lucky enough to find a small pool of water with great potential for nice reflection. To get picture like this I had to use very very low angle… This photo was taken shortly before my two previous posts Play the game & Walk in the magic light, shortly before sunset which makes colors stand out much more and give them much richer feel.

Shibam is a town in Hadramawt, Yemen with about 7,000 inhabitants. It has been the capital of the Hadramawt Kingdom for several periods of time. Shibam owes its fame to its distinct architecture, which now is on UNESCOs programme to safeguard the human cultural heritage. The houses of Shibam are all made out of mud bricks, but about 500 of them are tower houses, which rise 5 to 9 stories high. This technique of building was implemented in order to protect residents from Bedouin attacks. While Shibam has existed for around 2,000 years, most of the city's houses come mainly from the 16th century. However, many were rebuilt over and over again during the last few centuries. Shibam is often called "the oldest skyscraper-city in the world", or "Manhattan of the desert".

Security subject : I myself felt bit uneasy to go to Yemen, even though I currently live in middle east. Our trip was very safe, but we had armed convoy at few places. You have to be considered when travelling to place where there was a bomb attack on Spanish tourists last year and recent shooting at Belgium group. I think it is similar to situation in Sri Lanka. Few people don’t want tourist to come over and whole country suffers. If you decide to go, check with your embassy if it is ok to do so.

wow.... that's quite a reflection! a mirror, nothing less nothing more. Beautiful! Even the compositon is greatly improved by the kind of green cactus on the right.Tibo

Hi Lucie,
great photo with amazing sharpness and colours. The reflex in the water makes a professional composition :)
Well done,
Mateja

Hi Lucie,
Very cool title, made me laugh. Superb image, great sharpness and colors. Love the reflection. Very nice. So where is this midtown or downtown?
Cheers,
Claire

hi lucie
Great shot, great colors.

Hi Lucie,

I've seen a lot of photos of Shibam (and even taken a few), but never in a reflection! When I was there I experienced a sudden downpour which filled the river so that busses could not pass, but it was moving too fast for there to be a reflection. Great shot. cheers, Steve

Hello Lucie,

Etonnant !
Bravo !

Now Lucie,
I've seen a couple of photos of this place before,
and instantly fell in love with the place.
Your post have invigorated these feelings in me, and
now I will start searching for travel possibilities
to get there myself.
But, like a true Westerner, the first question that comes to my mind is how safe is to go down there?
(asking this as I have no clue about situation in Yemen).
For your photo - it's a lovely presentation with always
good combination of deep blue sky and ochre architecture. The perfect reflection makes the image even more interesting.
Looking forward to see more.
Robi

Wonderful photo. Kind of unique POV for this place. Like you, I found this place in TE, and it became one of the places I wish to visit in the near future, I even created a theme where this place is mentioned.
Your inclusion of a pond, plus the late afternoon light, created a great reflection and wonderful colours. Excellent job Lucie!

Great shot Lucie! The colour of this photo really jumps out of the frame and takes over our senses. The perfect refelction off the water is beautiful too, and I think unsual to see in a desert. Nice work and good information in the note!

Hi Lucinka,

Highly interesting note, both for your technique - very low point of view - and security of the country.

I've never see this location before and your title is funny and relevant. We can clearly make the parallel with Manhattan, with buildings vaguely looking like architecture from the 20's and 30's... Not only did you wait for gorgeous light, you also found yourself a perfect pond to achieve an impressive crystal clear reflection.

The sky is silky smooth and the buildings are sharp as a scalpel.

Stay safe!!!

André

Hi Lucie, such a majestic place you registered into your mermory card, lucky Lucie !
First time i saw that place it was Tan's one, i was hypnotized for long minutes ... same think for your shot that brings a little originality cause i hadn't seen it in full reflexion. So congratulations for this one, the unique POV and the temerity to travel there.
hhmmm i would eat that bluuue :)
Excellent

Lucie: an absolutely amazing image - full deserving of the praise heaped upon it below. Great note as well. regards, c

Hi Lucie,
A great shot, the reflect is perfect ! Colors and details are very very nice.

Hi Lucie,
Wow! It’s really impressive the work you have done to transform what could very well be a dull and cluttered scene, full of distracting elements, into a work of art, by finding a pool, amidst all that drought, in order to mirror the buildings and the sky. Superb colors, contrast, composition and courage. The light and the crystal clear reflection are so impressive...
Regards,
Victor

Hello Lucie:
I hate you! How is it that you got this one and I didn't, it goes to show that I don't have the magic Lucie landscape touch.
Really great everything, composition, colour, reflection.
cheers
Daniel
PS regarding the security situation I would also say that its safer traveling the way we were in one car, in spite of psycho driver, rather than travelling on a large convoy, because by yourself you keep a lower profile.

Ciao Lucie,
stunning image of the beautiful Shibam!
You captured reflections with a magic eye!
A smile
Luca

Hi Lucie - bravo in finding this body of water, it definitely gives a unique twist to the subject, one that may not be available the next day, next time I will bring several litres of water with me and create my own pond :-)
