[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Nine years ago I spent a few weeks in Yemen. I arrived in a country with a reputation for kidnappings and islamic extremism. However, I didn't meet anything but an incredible friendliness and hospitality and felt perfectly safe every minute. I admit, though, that I avoided some areas in the north where most kidnappings took place.
This is Shibam, generally known as the Manhattan of the desert, located in the Hadhramawt province in the South-East, and rated by UNESCO as a world heritage. The 5-7 stories high buildings are constructed by mud bricks and wood on stone foundations. At a distance, and from the air, the town is an unforgettable sight.
This is a scan from a Kodachrome slide. The camera I used was a Canon F-1

Hello Gert,

Shibam is a city I always admired, a phantastic architecture to be seen here. Due to daytime and the scan colours are a bit flat, but it gives a great impression of this wonderful place.

Hej Gert
I just read the book of Eva Sohlman (Felix Arabia) and found the country more than fascinating in a lot of aspects. just as a way of trying to understand the Arabic way of looking at things and in a wider perspective, to understand whats going on in this part of the world. The thing is, with small kids i'm not that hardcore traveller as I use to be so Yemen has to wait. thank you to let me have a glimes of it trought TE instead.

I plan to go to Yemen in the future, and this photo is a good motivation basis for me... :-)
Thank you!

Hi Gert

This is a city I have always wanted to visit. I hope too soon. There is something so romantic about it, the manhattan of the desert. What an impressive place. Well done.

Hej Gert,
Very interesting to see that you´ve got your new scanner working! Now I´m looking forward to see photos from your travels in Asia and Africa!

This is a very interesting picture with a narrow colour palette. Were the palms really that brownish green in reality?

Very good photo and very interesting architecture. I have never been in Yemen, but it is on my wish-list.
