Even when a wall is white and ochre, you can find little bits of bright color. In this case provided by electrical wires, which in Yemen are practically always to be found outside.

The vertical stripes come from the upper part of the wall (outside this crop) that isn't whitewashed: rainwater must have dissolved some of the mud plaster. This way whitewashed (lower) walls slowly revert to being ochre-colored, unless it's whitewashed again after the rainy seasons.

I like the contrast here between the vertical and horizontal stripes but I think the uncropped picture is nice, too - see my "workshop" version for that, and let me know which you prefer (and why)!
