Photographer’s Note
A strictly documentary post about a traditonal house which I was invited to visit - I had met these charming women in the path leading to a group of these houses and was instantly invited for tea. It was the day of departure back to Istanbul for some of these families but nonetheless they were ready to take some time to chat and we were very curious about each other. Charming people, charming hospitality.

(Sorry : professional deformation : I'm an ex tour guide with a strong interest in how the people live around the world, specially the traditional way).
(List of the same photos that can be seen with the above link :
- same persons taken just before
- upstairs, the corridor leading to the sleeping rooms
- the nice stairwell of the same house
- the tool shack with interesting baskets etc (where you can see the owner of the house, born inside it).
- the fire place with a "modern" addition (= inside, under the "chimneys"
- one local style of traditional chimneys seen from outside
- a group of traditional houses surrounded by tea gardens, topped with a higher typical chimney)

Günaydın sevgili Cath,
A capture which can create great interpretations.
Photographically it's perfect. Bu for me the most important part of it, to look at each individual face and interprete them.
The boy at left, entering the room has no idea at all, what's happening. The little girl is seemingly upset with her sister or maybe the mother. The mother may have some problems with her mother in law (if she is ?) . The mother in law is angry about someone which is not in the frame.
And at last, the young movie maker is fully in his own world and maybe dreams from a great success as film maker in the future. A proud face.
TFS and best regards
MESUT ILGIM

Hello dear Catherine,
This wonderful group portrait brings me back to your ongoing Turkey shots. A group, yet a collection of strong individuals, all very different. I love the interpretations Mesut Ilgim made. The stand-out character is the woman in the middle, the only one looking straight at us, but I love all of them, e.g. the boy walking into the scene.
So in my opinion, this telling portrait is more than 'a strictly documentary shot', in fact it reminds me of some carefully composed group portraits I've seen in art galleries! It even has a Velasquez-touch to it. Great stuff!

It really looks like a typical, yet wonderful, moment of family life. I like the fact that one boy is casually walking into the room, and another is filming you with the same curiosity with which you are photographing him! Maybe he'll put YOUR picture on TE, the exotic foreign lady who came to visit him. We are all learning about each other, aren't we, Cath? And you do it outstandingly well! Nice look on the smallest girl's face. Regards, Ken.
