As I promised before here comes the TOMBS of Caunos/Dalyan.

One of the most beautiful features of the site are the rock tombs sculpted in the form of the porticoes of small Ionic temples.

These are among the most splendid examples of Lycian type funerary architecture in Turkey, although the builders were Carians.

The original occupants of the tombs are obscure but are assumed to have been Caunian noblemen and rulers; in most cases they were vacanted and reused in Roman times. The largest one is unfinished, providing a curious glimpse of the method of construction.

The prosperity of Caunos was threatened by the silting of the harbor after which the city was eventually abandoned. The Mediterranean, which once surrounded the hill on which archaeological site stands, has now retreated 5 km. to the south, pushed back by silt from the Dalyan Cayi. The marsh which formed appears to have already been a problem for the harbor activities in Strabon times.

The border between the sea and the internal marsh is a long narrow beach called "the Turtle’s Beach."

This beach is one of the few remaining locations in the Mediterranean sea that has the right conditions for the Giant Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta Caretta) to reproduce. The Giant Loggerhead Turtles have used this beach as a laying ground since time immemorial, especially in June.

The females lay their eggs by night in the soft sand, in clutches of about 100. Since the early 90's the beach is closed to the public from 8 pm to 8 am to protect them. The beach is open during the day but swimmers and sunbathers are asked to exercise special care.

This picture is 80% same as the Tombs lycien by Tabora, but, a little bit more sharp.

This is the second photo of my Caunos series which began with Caunos-01

The trogloditic cravings have a look close to Treasure Palace in Petra's Siq

Wow! Look at that! Thank you for this photo, it is so interesting. You captured it well, a big object taken from distance, yet you have preserved enough detail for us to enjoy. Regards, Djenno

Comment ne pas rester admiratif devant un tel spectacle !
Fabuleuse architecture funéraire ! Merci Bulent pour le partage de ce fabuleux patrimoine.
Très belle composition. Merci également pour la note très détaillée.

How do not to remain admiring in front of such a spectacle!
Fabulous architecture funeral! Thank you Bulent for the sharing of it fabulous patrimony.
Very beautiful composition. Thank you also for the very detailed note.
Bravo!

Wondeful caverns. I think it looks like Petra in Jordan too.
Thanks for the note.

Very interesting note and the photo that goes with it. It is rare to see remains from this ancient civilizaiton. The image is well composed showing the rock face and hillside the tombs are carved out of. Beautiful late afternoon light and good sharpness. Bravo!

Very nice capture. I like the depth felt in this shot. It gives a monumental feel to the tombs. It has a Mount Rushmore feel from this distance. I really like the way the rock wall sticks out from the trees in a way above and below and just seems to beg to be carved into. The tombs really seem to be a natural part of the cliff in this way. And even from here you captured nice detail and very good texture. These are impressive tombs and you shared them in an impressive way. Very nicely done.

Dear Bulent, this is a very interesting location and a great description. Thank you much for sharing this photo. The photo is very sharp everywhere, congratulations. However, I thought that the colors are a little bit dull, so I modified and posted to the workshop about this nice photo.
