Last week, i was in Sanliurfa (Urfa, shortly), a beautiful and a very old city in the southeastern part of my country. I attended a congress about polymers in Harran University. After the congress, i had the chance to visit Syria as well. In the following days, i'll share photos from Damascus and Aleppo as well as photos from Sanliurfa.

Here, you see two native ladies with traditional clothings. The place is Balikligol (The Pool of Sacred Fish - neighbouring a smaller pool - Lake Aynzeliha), a sacred place for Muslims (there are numerous important sacred places in the city).

Lying southwest of the city center, these two lakes are known as the spot where Abraham fell when he was cast into the flames, and thanks to their sacred fish and the historical monuments in their vicinity attract more tourists than any other place in Urfa. Lake Halil-ür Rahman is graced by a special beauty due to the Rizvaniye Mosque on its northern shore, and the Halil-ür Rahman Mosque and Madrasa at its southwestern corner. The pool is in the courtyard of the mosque of Halil-ur-Rahman, built by the Ayyubids in 1211 and now surrounded by attractive gardens designed by architect Merih Karaaslan. The fish are not a pretty sight as they thrash about frantically devouring bread thrown by visitors. But the courtyard is very peaceful and it is said that if you see a white fish you will go to heaven.

The Legend:

When the Prophet Abraham opposed the cruel ruler Nimrod, and defended the idea of a single God in an attempt to woo the people from their idols, Nimrod cast him into the flames from the hill on which the citadel now stands. But God commanded the fire to be cool and healthful (The Holy Koran, Enbiya, Verse 69), upon which the fire turned to water and the firewood to fish, and Abraham fell unscathed into a rose garden. According to legend, Nimrod’s daughter Zeliha believed in Abraham way and therefore threw herself into the flames; the place she fell became Lake Aynzeliha. Visitors hold the fish in both lakes to be sacred, and will neither inflict harm on nor eat them.

Merhaba Deniz,
Renklerdeki uyum ancak bukadar olur,taşların ve hanımların elbiseleri aynı ton bej,,suyun gökyüzünün ve öndeki hanımın iç elbise ve eşarbının maviside benzer tonlarda olunca müthiş görsellik oluşmuş.Ağız tadıyla seyredilen nefis bir kare.Kutlarım,eline sağlık .Haleplerini merakla bekliyeceğim bende gitmek istiyorum çünkü.Selamlar

Vaaayyyy!!
Opuyorum cok

Son ekleme. Ondeki kadinin bas ortusu ve icindeki elbisesinin deseninin birbirine cok yakin oldugunu fark etmis miydin? Gerci senden kacmaz ama :)

Hi Deno!

This is a diferent "face" of Turkey, far from Istanbul but equally beautiful and maybe even more interesting. Your photo is an excellent example of travel photography, the style that I really like, here you have mixed a beautiful daily life scene and a fantastic architecture photo! Perfect composition, perfect framing, great depth of field, and beautiful light, the warm colours are very pleasant! Congratulations!

Hercules

Deniz,
this isn't necessarily your rigoletto style - dark and light - and yet it works perfectly well. the ladies makeing eye contact with the sacred lake and the minarette at the left side makes a nice composition. have you thought about correcting the lens distortion?
Peter

Merhaba,

Exceptional depiction of architectural details through a colorful photo.
The two ladies, perfect choice to include them in to your frame, gives the necessary touch of life to the composition.

Hi Deniz,

This is absolutely gorgeous, for the saturated warm colours, the beautiful light, the low-angle view and the brilliant composition.

Because of the wall behind the women, your photo is visually divided, one third being a double portrait and the second 2/3 emphasizes on the architectural aspect of the location. One of your best shots in recent months. Like it a lot!!!

Cheers!

I prefer this one from you posts lately,
people in it, on top women, nicely aside as intro to the depht of this like the buildings slight reflected in the rimpeling water, nice colortones and well chosen pano border!

Hello Deniz,
good use of the 18mm here to give us full details about the 2 ladies and their very nice clothing and at the same time having this panorame over the courtyard and pool.
The light was very beautiful at the time you took the photo and created a nice mood on the photo.
A mood of mild temperatures mixed with pure air, this is what this photo makes me feel, am I correct?
Cheers.

So, you visited Edessa! Did you pray to the holy carp there?
Is it possible to eat them too? I’m sure that they would be miraculous healthy.

Excellent postcard shot btw.

Hi Deniz,
It's hard to choose a post to critique from this series of yours from this place that looks so interesting.
The POV, the light, clarity and sharpness are great, very attractive and effective in showing the place. Then there is the bonus of the two ladies dressed in traditional clothes looking at us. In other circumstances maybe I would complain about the excessive darkness under the arch on the right, but I won't because not only there isn't any relevant thing there, but also because if those persons were more clearly visible, they would disturb the rest of the image.
Regards, José.

Hi Deniz,
Unfortunately I was away for such a long time and I missed several great photosm of yours.
...Like this one! I always love the precence of the human element among historical sights. And you managed it very well here! I really like the composition: the disposal of the bg and fg. Both the women and the archway and lake leading into the distance catch the eye. The light adjustment and the natural colours look also perfect!
TFS!
Cheers,
Marci
