[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A street of the small town of Çavdarhisar, next to a Roman temple dedicated to Zeus. Because the village lies on and in between the remains of the ancient city of Aizanoi, it has been declared “monumental area” (“SIT alani” in Turkish). That was clearly a sound decision, but for the inhabitants of these streets it meant that they could not repair or demolish their houses without official approval. It seems most of them choose an other option: Just to move (probably to the modern part of the town) and abandon their property. Çavdarhisar is thus not only a very interesting place to visit for ruins of classical times, but also for the remains of a traditional rural settlement. In this sense it is also something like an open air museum of Ottoman rural architecture. Unless however someone turns up with a grand scheme to restore the houses with official approval, everything will crumble and disappear in time, as some structures already did.

I took this photo shortly after sunset. Not much light therefore, but luckily the snow compensates somewhat for the dominant dark tones. Çavdarhisar is always a melancholical place, but still more in winter.
