Photographer’s Note
"Tourists..." it seemed like this guy was saying as he walked past us with his little granddaughter in tow.
It was early on the second day that we were in Selcuk, and my buddy and I decided to wander around taking pictures of people as they were heading off to start the day.
As we walked up the hill, we smelled the smoke of a wood fire, and peering over the wall, we saw an old lady and her daughters cooking flat bread. When the old woman caught me looking, I motioned with my camera to get permission to take a picture. Instead, she motioned for us to come down. She and her three daughters sat us down by the fire, and brought us some tea.
As we sat and worked our way through a conversation based around the Lonely Planet Turkish Phrasebook, she taught us how to cook the bread. After a few minutes, we started to get up to leave, and she motioned for us to sit back down. The middle daughter then brought out tomatoes, cucumbers, and goat cheese, which we ate with bread and more cheese.
We ended up staying for almost an hour before heading back out on the road. It was one of the best examples of the hospitality I've often found while traveling, and remains one of my favorite travel memories.
