Photographer’s Note
Ephesus is perhaps the best example in ruins of the center of a Roman city. This is a part that is slightly off the beat track; however, it would have been prime real estate in Roman times. You can see evidence of brick walls, doorways, columns and an ornate fountain.
As for the image, I found something about it with all the square and neatly ordered lines. It seems to command elegance even after over a thousand years of abandonment.

Hi Dan,
February seems an unusual time of year to visit Ephesus. We went to Turkey at the back end of the season (September) when the weather was fine, clear and warm. The Ephesus trip was one of the true highlights and it's good to see this out of the way des-res.
Although it brings back great memories, as an image I find it doesnt' really work for me. It has a lot of good elements - a doorway to lead the eye into the picture, foreground interest, light and shadow, what looks like an enormous bird bath at the focal point in the shot and another portal into the far distance. And yet ... it doesn't seem to hang together overall. Maybe it's the fact that it's a ruin, I don't know. Ah, I wonder if monochrome would help here to give a sense of antiquity?
