Comakdag (aka Kizilagac) is a mountain village that continues to embrace its old traditions. The village is famous with local women's flowered beadscarves and the tradition presenting large amounts of gold as wedding gifts. Comakdag women who go to work in the fields wearing their pieces of gold, colorful dresses, and put fresh flowers on their head are unique.
Pieces of gold... Symbols of childhood being a girl, and a bride. At the wedding a bride is presented with four kilograms of gold; and people of Comakdag say they have to save money from their childhood onwards in order to sustain this tradition.
The silk head-dress is called "çemperi". A piece of jewellery made of Ottoman gold coins is attached to the forehead and adorned with fresh flowers.
COMAKDAGI/KIZILAGAC VILLAGE
This village, under the jurisdiction of Milas, has a population of nearly 1200. It has managed to preserve its traditions and carry them through to the present day and because of this, has a special attraction. The village boasts 400-year old stone houses, unusual chimney forms, carved wooden doors, windows and ceilings, traditional costumes and gold jewellery used even in everyday life, silk weaving, the traditional handcrafts of yaneş and nazarlık, the Aegean folk dance zeybek oyunu and wedding ceremonies lasting four days. All of these features make this village a place worth visiting.
HOW TO GET THERE
Çomakdağı is 14 km from Milas and 60 km from Bodrum. Except for coaches it can be reached by any vehicle. There are two ways of reaching the village
Firstly, by taking the turn for the ancient ruins of Labranda, off the Bodrum-İzmir highway, just before Milas bus station. This route passes through the villages of Kızılcayıkık, Bahçeburun, and Çınarlı.
Or secondly, by taking the road to Dibekdere village, just after Milas bus station. This route passes through Kafaca and Epçe.
