A Fairy Chimney is a conical rock formation, typically found in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. It consists of a cap of hard rock resting on a cone-shaped pinnacle of softer rock. In Cappadocia, houses have been carved from these formations.
The geology of areas where Fairy Chimneys form typically comprises a thick layer of tuff (consolidated volcanic ash), covered by a thin layer of basalt. Over time, cracks in the basalt allow the much softer tuff to be eroded and washed away. Fairy Chimneys are formed where a small cap or boulder of the original basalt remains, and protects a cone of tuff beneath it from erosion. Eventually, the tuff will be undercut to the extent that the cap falls off, and the remaining cone is then quickly eroded.
The Göreme National Park (Göreme Milli Parklar in Turkish) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Listing in 1985.

This has a totlly different feel from your usual photos Poalo. Usually we get the wide open spaces, and room to brathe. Here you close us in this tight frame, and if people have phobias of closed spaces this photo may scare them. As usual though, you chose a fabtastic view in terms of the sheer view but also in terms of color which drives your photos.

Hello Paolo,

Having been there 25 times, I know well the spot. Although you tell us that it has been scanned, I think there's also some manipulation, because of the blue tones: But overall it creates an almost unreal picture.

Ciao Paolo! Hypnotic colours, fantastic landscape... the famous Cappadocia. I had no idea what will greet me when opening the thumbnail, it looked so abstract, so interesting, and indeed it is, but with the added knowledge of a landscape. Looks like one of the finest spots in the world.

The close cropping works well, Paolo, and quality is not too bad for a scanned image. I have never seen the aquamarine tones in this valley. Did you add this through PP or was this an effect of the light that evening? If the latter, it is quite an extarordinary capture. Cheers . . . David
