| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This fresco, called the Anastasis, can be seen in the Church of St Saviour in Chora. Besides its marvellous frescoes, the church has some well preserved and very beautiful mosaics and is a place you should definitely visit when you are in Istanbul. I loved teh pastel colors of this artwork.
"The frescoes in the paracclesion (*) are thought to have been painted just after the mosaics were completed, probably around 1320. The most engaging of the frescoes - which reflect the purpose of the paracclesion as a place of burial - is the Anastasis in the semidome above the apse. In it, the central figure of Christ, the vanquisher of death, is shown dragging Adam and Eve out of their tombs. Under Christ's feet are the gates of hell, while Satan lies before him. The fresco in the vault overhead depicts the Last Judgement, with the souls of the saved on the right and those of the damned to the left."
