One from my archives today. I spotted this young woman sitting alone in the precincts of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Who was she calling, husband, mother sister or friend?
In the WS I have posted a monochrome version with a slightly different crop as I wasn’t sure which I preferred
Here is a larger version

very nie the portrait of the young woman as she sits on the stair of the house entrance,
talking in her mobile phone.I like the excellent presentation, the light and the colour management as the clarity of the scene.

Good observed and captured !
I personally do not accept that the number of veiled women in Turkey increases more and more but this is the reality. Allthough they use all the Western Technologies, they still prefer to dress themselves as in the times of the prophetes.
By the way, your WS in b&w is also very good. Specially for me , a lower of b&w photography.
TFS and best regards

Ciao e buona serata

She looks very pensive this lady on her mobile phone. I like the framing, which suits the ways she is sitting in the corner of the doorway. Very good technical presentation.

Nice portrait of the Turkish lady busy in conversation. I like the coloured version as it lets me enjoy the nice timber colour on the door which provides a good contrasting BG for the subject. Good moment captured. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent framing with fine natural colours and great clarity. we can only guess the answer to what you have asked but the lady makes a very good subject with her blue dress contrasting beautifully against the door in the background. thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

a modern day classic, and whilst I do not see this one gracing hordes of living room walls, it has a charm and impact that deserves recognition. Superb clarity, detailing and character make this beautiful and irresistible. I love it!
I definitely prefer the colour one!

Hello Rosemary, Both pictures are nice but I prefer in colours. Mobiles everywhere :). The girls looks concerned or worried, or maybe it is just imagination. She wears jeans but also long coat and Muslim scarf. Good observztion. The even tighter crop, for portrait would be nice too.

Pictures of "people with cellphones" are becoming like a category of their own. They are just so tempting, and sometimes quite funny. This is not really funny, just a fine and very up to date portrait. The woman is sitting very nicely, well placed in the composition, and her blue clothes match the brown door very well. I like the ws too, but I prefer this, where she is less centred. Also, in the ws there is a white line along the left side that I am not so fond of.

A cool portrait. That huge brown door makes an excellent background. Using the phone gives the woman a certain look that tells her thoughts are further away. I like that ladybug theme bag. It makes me prefer this colour version. And this shows less of that off focus foreground detail which is slightly distractive.

I like in this photo the inspired use of contrast between the door's pattern and the plain color of the dress, the technology with the tradition and also the detail of the red ladybug on the plastic bag which I would prefer it at the front!
Very nice photo.

the mix of old and new give this well composed shot so much charm and interest, without doubt on this occasion the colour version comes out tops for me,it might be the red ladybird motif that seals the deal.
A lovely street scene.
Kind regards Les.

Your name ends where my only one begins, did you noticed?
From far I prefered this one and my idea is that she is calling and waiting for an answer
Like the capture because of the contrasts, jeans and phone but also a kind of veil
The BG provided but the good old door helps also with color contrast

A nice study, Rosemary - looks like you got low on the ground for this one? Or were you coming up steps? The overall traditional view here is broken by the cellphone and the ladybug bag, and both are effective in doing so. And while I do like the WS, I find this more compelling; the textures of the wall come out much more in monochrome but they aren't the real draw here, and it loses a bit by not having the bright blue of the jacket and the red of the bag interacting. And I also love the deep tones of the door behind them.

Superb shot of the young Turkish girl, sharp with good details, well saturated colors and nice composition. Well done. TFS.

Yep modern times every where we look some one is on their phone or what I hate especially on trains is some one having a raised or intimate conversation.
Your young lady here is very well placed in front of this splendid door, I love her lady bird bag very striking.
Well managed, Tfs,
Have a good weekend,

How the curse of the mobile 'phone appears to have pervaded every single corner of our Earth! And again we see that totally blank facial expression as the user stares into space, totally unaware of their surroundings and concentrating on nothing other than the voice emanating from their electronic apparatus.
Whether the facial expression of this young lady is one of sweet serenity and innocence or just the familiar blank expression of a mobile 'phone user is difficult to tell but you have caught it amazingly well in this beautiful photograph. She was probably totally unaware of your presence in any case and that always benefits any candid shot.
A very well composed photograph with lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness. I have studied both this and your black and white version and definitely prefer this colour one - the colours, of course, are lovely and add to the appeal - but I also prefer the closer crop of this one too.
macjake (67532) 2014-03-21 3:18
personally i prefer the colored version, but its really just a matter of choice.
Usually i'm pretty good at reading people's facial expressions, but her's...she's got a good poker face!
perhaps she's waiting for the other person to pick up, to me it seems she's not engaged yet.
and as for the door...a door can be JUST a door, but when they're constructed beautifully and with attention they truly stand out - as does that one.
I'll have to let you know in the future of any detailed plans to Namibia :)
thanks as always

what a shot! I like this portrait of this lady using a mobile phone. Your framing is superb here with the part of this well textured door. Excellent shot with nice depth and colour tone. Tfs.

this is eye catching as a thumbnail and rewards clicking on to view large. My first thought is that the woman is a Mona Lisa, her gaze and the set of her mouth give little away. My second thought was to wonder where you were when you took this shot. You seem to have a low pov. Pity about the out of focus stone pillar at bottom left but that couldn't be helped. With street shots such as these you have to aim and shoot and hope for the best. You did well.
Thank you for your kind critique of my first posting in a long while.

I like how you captured the seemingly pensive mood of the young lady perhaps unaware of her photo being taken. Nice shot!

Hello dear Rosemary
We also had a similar scene in some mosque in Istanbul, but unlike you I failed miserably in taking a decent picture...papparazzi style failed altogether..
Seeing your this picture, I feel envious..quite interesting the dress she wears and the heavy wooden door which is a fine backdrop of your pretty subject.

I have just viewed the workshop version and I much prefer the one you have posted in the main gallery. The B and W still works perfectly but I think it is the crop that makes the difference. This is a lovely contemplative image. A fine capture, with lovely sharpness and detail.
Thanks for sharing
